3 stinking hours to change the oil on my bike!

Why would one use Rotella, with an additive package for Diesel Fuel, in an engine that burns gasoline? :dunno:

Because it's good oil that works well in many applications outside of what it was designed for? It's also popular for use in the 3000GT world - it handles the heat from the turbos very well.

Yeah, I've read and been told by a mechanic that synthetics can't be used in bikes with wet clutches, which includes most Sport Bikes. Something about Molybdenum. I've never heard of anyone having a problem, but I'd rather not be the first.

Your mechanic is an idiot. There are about a thousand different fully synthetic oils that are designed specifically for bikes with wet clutches. I've never run anything but full synthetic in any of my bikes, and never had a problem with any of them. There is however a difference between motorcycle oil and car oil. Dont use car oil. Diesel oil however has been used by many including myself with fantastic results, as it's basically the same thing as motorcycle oil. Do some research of your own to make your own decisions, but the bottom line is that there are MANY motorcycle specific synthetic options out there.

I've ran Mobil 1 full synthetic motorcycle oil in my Concours since it has had 500 miles on it.

I'm pretty anal about doing things on the bike by the book, but I'm also interested in max performance on the bike

Or less, my F-150 has ~110k on it, and I've replaced two so far. I've also not replaced the plugs on that 5.4 due to the plug shell/soft head threads issue. Since I know it's going to be a total pain in the ass, I'm delaying until I HAVE to replace the plugs.

I would replace those plugs ASAP. The issue you're describing didn't happen until I think 2003.

Original spark plug issue:
Ford didn't put enough threads to hold the plugs and it they would untorque over time and blow out. When it blows out it will destroy the COP and is a major PITA to fix. I went through this last year on my '01 F150. Cost me well over $500.

Ford recognized the original spark plug issue and fixed it sometime around 2003. They fixed it REAL GOOD by adding LOTS of threads so those bastards will never blow out again! The problem is you can't get the plug out and generally strip the head trying.

OK, I may look at it soon.

I've run that in every bike since I started using the synthetics, but was specifically warned away by a mechanic and a few others. Hey, I admit to being stupid about these things, I'm not going to second guess guys with some knowledge and experience in the biz.

There are some good motorcycle synthetics, I'll probably be better prepared next time I go for another sport bike disassembly session. I just had a narrow window to get it done and had to use the bet I could find down the street. Losing the good weather to do this stuff fast.

Understand. The main reason I use the Mobil 1 is because it's relatively easy to find. All the Autozones around here carry it. Although, it's fairly common, that I end up having to go to multiple stores to get all 4 quarts. All too often they'll only have one or two quarts.

Re: the OP...

4 bikes in the stable.

My 2005 KTM 950 Adventure might actually take 3 hours. Lots of stuff to remove, screens to clean, that sort of thing.

2 BMW K1200RS's, one with sidecar, one without. Pretty straightforward, about an hour. Cover on oil pan needs to be removed to get to the spin-on filter. Use Mobil 1 15w50 auto synthetic, not an issue with a dry clutch.

2003 Buell XB9R, about an hour. Easy spin off filter and oil carried in the swingarm, pretty easy to drain/fill.

I need the I'm With Stupid smiley......

The Rotella dino and synthetic are great oils, bikes, performance cars, diesels. I put 20K a year on my KLR 650 driving from SD to Tijuana every day for work for a year and a half. No worries. Several years of racing small V twins and inline 600cc 4's in the California desert. I popped a motor here and there, but that was pure heat or solid metal to metal contact, not lubrication related.
My current bike doesn't have Rotella in it because it needs 2T oil to make smoke...... riiinnnng a diiinnnng.

I don't want to argue about oil, the superiority of the low wing to the high wing that's a different story... But if you want a good oil at a price that doesn't drain your wallet.... Rotella T. Or not....its 'Merica and you can choose....

Im going to start my RZ and make some noise now...:D

Oooh, RZ-350. I always wanted to ride one, what's it like? Bonus points if it's the bumble bee color scheme.

When I got ready to pull the trigger in 1985, I chickened out and went for:

A hoot.

For perspective, they did NOT sell well, at least in S FL. I got mine new at a discount after it sat, unsold, for at least a year.

On the one hand, wish I still had it.

On the other hand, after just a few years I needed a small emissions filter and the dealer already listed it as No Longer Available. Made me worry about support going forward.

By contrast, at the same time I could walk into a BMW dealer and get a float bowl gasket for a 1964 R27!

That one I kind of wish I still had!

I shouldn't ***** so, the 954 is actually fairly easy to change, just an exposed oil drain plug and a spin on oil filter. Just a pain getting all the fairings off, lots of bolts and the stuff is easily scratched. Hey, it's done, and at the rate I ride will probably be good for a couple seasons. Time was when I had to change the oil twice a season. Ahh me.

After reading this thread, I rode my "Liner" into Yakima and had their metric mechanic replace the oil and transfer case oil. They didn't make the T/C an easy job, but I was seated in an area where I could watch. He had to remove part of the muffler.

Yep. '84 in KR colors. Only pic I had handy is of it behind my in-progress Skybolt.

They are a blast to ride. I grin like a pig in ***** when I ride it.
This one is getting a new Penske Shock and some suspension/brake work over the winter.
If I didn't spend so much $$$ flying it would have a 5mm over crank, head, pistons, ti pipes, etc and be really scary fun...

Because they used the motor, well most of it, in the banshee quad for years, there are some very nice parts if you can get the 2T fairy to bring them.

If I ever find a nice RZ500, this one will be for sale. I need 4 smoking pipes like most guys here need to burn kerosene.
Or a Gamma...mmmm I loves me some Gamma. Paint up in Schwantz replica colors...
Or an H750 triple. That's a good way to die to.

Nice! I know a guy that has an NSR400 triple, he loves it.
