That's how long I've been around. I think the thing that surprises me the most (although it shouldn't--I just never thought about it) is how many people my age are already dead. Many more are a lot less healthy than I am. I've come to appreciate--a LOT--having been raised by parents who were physically active (I was backpacking in the Sierra Nevada from the time I was a little girl, and I'm a geologist, which means a lot more backpacking and hiking). It might have been hard on my knees (I'm facing replacing the second one soon), but it sure made a difference otherwise (besides, most of my family has had knee issues). I have a very reasonable expectation of living at least another 15 years. Life is good.

A few years ago I was talking to the organizer of our 50-year high school grad reunion. She told me that one-third of our class was gone already.

It was a stark reminder that life expectancy is an average, not a guarantee.

Congratulations! I'm about a year ahead of you and still rolling along pretty well.

However...

It's a simple fact that you can try to do everything in your power to stay fit - eat right and exercise, for example - and still have medical stuff come at you unexpectedly. I'm losing more and more friends and family and it may be comforting to point at things they might have done to accelerate their demise, but there's all too often nothing specific to point to. So just do the best you can and enjoy every day while you can.

Hope your day is blessed!

I was recently in a nursing facility to see a friend and as I came down the hall a custodian asked how I was doing. "I've got nothing to complain about" was my reply. He then told me it didn't do any good to complain 'cause ain't nobody listening. I said, "you didn't hear me, I've got no reason to complain."

I then pointed out that there were many folks in there that couldn't see, hear, walk, or know who was looking at them in the mirror. "Just take a look around ... I'm extremely blessed and so are you my friend!" He smiled and walked away. Perhaps I gave him a little food for thought ... :dunno:

I was with a group of pilots in a little flying club. What started with about 40 members which is now down to seven with three having airplanes and still flying. I like to remember the trips we took together and the fun we had while flying.

I'm almost 2 years behind you. My wife has had one knee, both hips and additional work done on her shoulders. She needs to have her right knee replaced, but is holding off until we don't have travel scheduled for the recovery period. By comparison, I'm in great shape. Although my problems are in different areas and one cost me my medical. Unexplained loss of conscience. That was in February and we're (doctors) still trying to figure out the cause. Oh well, it was a fun 25 years.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, YOUNG LADY!
:cheerswine: :happydance:

Hope your hubby gifted you with something fitting for the occasion, like a nice Les Paul.

Hang in there, you can do it.!!

It's all in the jeans. (genes) My mom just turned 94. Right now she is the oldest living member of our family. She is the last one of the family that lived through WWII.

outside of weight ratio and cardio in working age, the longevity post 70 is largely genetics if large comorbidities weren't introduced (smoking, carcinogenic work environments, diet, etc). Life ain't fair. being alive today is a blessing, cherish the opportunity, and carpe diem! congrats.

Happy birthday, Judy.

Keep active, life is dull if you do not.

I walked a quarter mile to a community picnic today, then back home.. Total of a mile now. 16 years older than you. There is a lot of good life ahead, just keep living it.

Just a couple weeks ago, a guy that had been my supervisor for decades died. I didn't realize until the funeral that he was born the same year as I (1952). Sucks.

But, Happy Birthday (plus a couple days)!!!!!

My parents were both 92 when they died. One grandmother was 94, the other 90. 92 seems to be about the average for women in my family. It definitely helps to have good genes, and as someone else pointed out, after 70, genetic factors seem to predominate (absent any major environmental issues). I've got great genes, but it is kind of sobering realizing that I probably have only 17 years. I remember the last 17 years like they were yesterday. It's not a lot of time.

I wouldn't ask because he already bought me my beautiful Stratocaster. But I have noticed, now that I'm getting into jazz, that Les Pauls are much, much more commonly played by jazz guitarists than Fenders (although my teacher picked up a Strat yesterday to demonstrate something).

Happy birthday Judy! Do all you can for as long as you can!
My dad had a cousin who was stopped for speeding when he was 96. The police woman told him “Most people your age don’t drive.”
He responded “Most people my age are dead.”

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes!
