Did not see a thread on this. Yesterday, a C172 was hijacked out of YYJ. Person used force to remove instructor and take the airplane. The airplane was flown directly to YVR where the pilot flew around the airport around 500-800 feet. This caused a 30 minute disruption. The pilot then decided to land, after which he was arrested. He was the sole occupant. He broadcast about the upcoming climate apocalypse, and that is why he wanted to shut the airspace down. It is an interesting scenario, and had he stayed aloft for many hours I am not sure what would have been done. The flight over from YYJ took some time. I am happy he made the choice to land safely. During the event, it was certainly on everyones minds that there were 25+ loaded airplanes sitting on the ground... as well as any number of areas at the airport that could be targeted.

It's just as effective as those people protesting food wastage by going to grocery stores and destroying perfectly good food products. Maybe it is compelling for people in a similar IQ bracket as the people who do that stuff?

So let me get this straight to protest climate change you do things that burn fossil fuel unnecessarily? Brilliant, just brilliant.
Not to mention caused a large number of aircraft to sit idling on the ground for 30+ minutes, and divert many inbound aircraft to stay in the air for much longer than needed.

Happened in Canada. Isn’t pot legal up there? No telling what a stoner’s going to do.
Pot is indeed legal up here. I don't know though, the stoners I know would be way too unmotivated to go through all that. Meth on the other hand....

I would imagine a bit of rotor downwash from an AH-64 might have persuaded him to land a bit earlier ...

great, now there's gonna be TFR's around every airport.................................................. :)

I would be curious if the Canadian military would respond to such an event. I know the US would probably get at least some resources up there, at least a Blackhawk or something to get eyes on to see what he is trying to do. For all they know he is on a suicide mission to crash into something.

That was the first question. You assume the worst... closest fighter assets to YVR are in Cold lake Alberta. Even at Supersonic speeds, it is 657 miles away. NORAD was contacted... Whidbey is close by.

I would assume Canada would have something on the west coast, even a Coast Guard helo or something. Doesn't have to be a fighter. In the US, you are just as likely to be intercepted by a Blackhawk as you are a fighter.

Hopefully the instructor was a woman. If you are a guy and let one of the purple hairs strong arm you out of your airplane, be ready for some well deserved ridicule.
maybe he superglued his hand to the panel

Nearest Canadian Air rescue station IIRC is RCAF Comox, about 320 NM NW. But the Canadians are far more level headed then we, mostly.....No air response necessary. I mean, the skyhawk runs out of fuel B4 anyone can get there....

We have helis and some other patrol aircraft out there. Rumour is NORAD scrambled interceptors from Portland area.

Remember, it's Canada. The instructor politely vacated the aircraft when commanded.

I have yet to see any "activist" do anything logical.
It seems to be a new form of activism induced mental illness … basically the same form of insanity like that exhibited by folks who destroy works of art ( famous paintings etc ) to protest oil consumption or block highways and harass people going to work.

Glad no one was injured!

But... Yawn... Stealing an aircraft just hasn't been the same since this guy. He's a hard act to follow for getting attention.
If we're talking about excitement caused by a 172, Mathias Rust did a pretty good job of shaking up the Kremlin.

I would love to see a video of the landing.
He landed very nicely. I can confirm that as an eyewitness. He flew around very competently. He was a commercial pilot, for a small airline here in the past.
just wondering what happened with the student.
He used the discovery flight as a way to get to the airplane. As they taxied out to the runway he pulled a knife and kicked the instructor out. A quick google search will reveal his X manifesto. He says he is the messiah for climate change, a prophet for Allah, and that the angel of Gabriel has given him a message. He also said he is forbidden from wearing underpants and flying!

And there is nothing new under the sun . . .. (Bananas 1971)

Tip Tanks already covered so much of this “hijacking” but here’s a pretty in-depth story from a news report in Canada. The US scrambled F-15s as they were the closest but still didn’t arrive before the incident was over. Very thorough story though.

And now on to the Air India report that the captain turned off the fuel to the engines on purpose 3 seconds after takeoff, On Purpose!
More sadness and time to potentially look more into mental illness, depression?
