11foot8 bridge lives on...

When we had a marina, we had to move a very large boat from one side of the road to the other under a bridge. It was really close—wouldn't quite make it—so we flooded the bilge with a few hundred gallons of water. That worked.
Locally, the dug the road down under a low road bridge, to get the required clearance (all new bridges must be built to such a standard.) Now water pools under the bridge.

In Groton CT, early submarines used the same trick to get under the bridge across the Thames River without waiting for an opening. They would carefully flood tanks until they were “decks awash” with just the conning tower above water. It was close and dependent on the tide, but a captain who has been at sea long enough will be resourceful. I have been told they did not do this on the way out to avoid flooding with dirty river water.

A summary of some of the better ones....just shows how stupid drivers are getting.
