FlylikeaGirl and I are newly checked out in the club 172, and we're looking for a place to fly on or about 22 Mar for a $100 $250 hamburger. We've already been to KEYE, so would like to try something different.

The other post on this board about London/Corbin sounds appealing, but maybe a little far.

Other ideas?

Madison, Indiana is a really cool town with over 100 blocks on the national historic register. It's a beautiful old all brick town on the Ohio River. Lots of shops, lots of restaurants and lots of B&Bs.

The downside:

The airport is a few miles out of town and they have no courtesy cars so you have to rent a car just to have lunch or to spend the afternoon.

It's a great town in which to spend an entire afternoon...or more.

Also, for future planning, Lee Bottom is pretty close to you too and just south of Madison. I think they've adequately recovered from their tornado and will probably have sinful Sundays again this year. Sinful Sunday is the second Sunday of each month in June, July & August. Basically, it's a big ice cream social and party.

SSSS = Sinful Sunday is Second Sunday.

I've been to Madison a few times and the last time we went, we stayed at a B&B for two nights and then dropped by Lee Bottom for Sinful Sunday on the way home. It was a great weekend. Highly recommended.

As an aside:

I just got off the phone with the mayor's office and the chamber of commerce both informing them that they're really missing the boat. I recommended that they establish a shuttle service to/from the town & airport at least from noon Friday through the end of the day on Sunday. I don't think a courtesy car or two would work well for them because of the typical time limit.

Don't forget about the $100 hot dogs at Sporty's every Saturday at lunch.

Not exactly "date" material, though!

2nd for PMH. Also, It's a tad longer than 100 miles but K22 has an awesome restraunt on field.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

1. Hadn't heard of fly2lunch before. Thanks for the tip.

2. Sporty's and Lunken are both REALLY close by both car and airplane. We'd probably go somewhere we felt like we were getting out of the pattern. For those interested though, the Sky Galley at Lunken (KLUK) is really good chow.

3. I had heard about Lee Bottom from a guy that I met in the Frankfurt airport who was wearing a Lee Bottom t-shirt while waiting for our flight. I was happy to speak English with a native speaker, and got the bonus that he's a pilot from Indiana. That's definitely on the list for later in the summer.

4. Looks like K22 has changed identifiers to KSJS? Garmin Pilot couldn't find it as K22. Thanks for that tip. Looks like a cool place.

5. Portsmouth is on the list now. Thanks for that.

Yea I forgot to edit that. K22 is now SJS. You can't go wrong at either PMH or SJS. Also nice on field chow at PKB in WV. It's a tad longer as well though.

And, our plane just got out of annual, so I'm hoping to get to either of these for lunch this weekend.

Speaking of KHAO what's the FBO like? Landing fees? Crew car?

Well.. all of those are great suggestions. Don't forget about the midwest POA fly in hosted by Tim Myers. Check out the Ohio Pilots page on FB and there is always someone looking to do the $250 hamburger thing from this area. Urbana is my Fav. Unless its summer time then Im going to Put-in-Bay.

The front desk people at the FBO (Cincinnati Jet Center) are members of our club and nice guys. As I'm based here, I don't know about crew car and landing fees.

I will say that fuel is very expensive. You'd be better off for fuel at almost any other area drome. The story I've been told is that when the county bought the airport from the Hogans, the bought only the terminal/fbo building, and not the hangars. So the only income source for the county is fuel. :(

Thanks for the tip. I make it a mission in life to avoid FB. Do they have a presence anywhere else?

Not a bad idea. Before our son was born, I looked into a day trip down to Madison, and got hung up on getting from the airport to town. Many years ago, my wife and I did the B&B weekend down there, and had a great time, although a whole weekend would be a little much for a return visit.

Did the idea of a shuttle get any traction?

A place that folks can fly that there is a free shuttle is the French Lick, Indiana airport. You can get a free shuttle from the airport and back to either of the two resort hotels, French Lick or West Baden Springs. http://www.frenchlick.com/hotels/westbaden There are resaurants, and there is a small casino there if you like that kind of thing. Just call the hotel and tell them you when you want to come in. This would not be a bad weekend get-a-way for a couple with a plane.

West Baden sort of reminded me of the Greenbrier, but not quite as nice-- although granted that is a pretty high bar to be measured by.

I 2nd KPMH, and "The Hanger" at London (Kloz).

For a "really special" evening, there's a spectacular French rest called Le Relias at Bowman Field in Louisville (KLOU). They've recently reworked their prices...not nearly as spendy as it used to be, but it's still a bit pricey. (worth it IMHO...). Only open for dinner, so maybe a overnighter?

Also a bit out of the 100 mi range, but not to be overlooked is Rough River State Park (2I3). Pretty airport (no fuel) and the lodge within walking distance. Great buffet...
