How to tell if a grass runway is too wet to takeoff?

I'd like to go flying tomorrow but we've had a couple days of on/off rain. Any tips on how to tell if the runway is too soggy to use? I was thinking if I drive my car on it and it doesn't make ruts it's probably fine :dunno:.

    Commerical XC requirements

I'm trying to inventory what I would need in the way of flight time in order to qualify for a commercial certificate. During my IFR training, my instructor and I took a very long XC in a PA-32R-300: Longest leg ~330 nm, 5.6 hobbs, 3 airports, 3 different types of approaches. It was during the...

Skydiving plane makes emergency landing on a highway in NJ...

Didn't see this posted here yet. Looks like he did a great job, everyone ok - 1 pax injured with a small cut. I'm surprised he was able to avoid all the power lines in this area. http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/breaking/Plane-New-Jersey-Route-72-Landing-314296501.html

GTN650 comm radio not working after software update

Everything was working fine until one of the club members updated the GTN 650 the other day. Now the comm radio is not working. You can select the frequency on the 650 but there's no side tone, no reception, and no one can hear transmissions...nothing. Is there anything we can check ourselves...

    Departing VFR

Question about departing VFR - Say it's a CAVU day and I file an IFR flight plan. I call CD/Approach on the phone and get my clearance but I'm not sure how long I'll need to depart because I need to load pax, run up etc. If I depart VFR, will I need to copy and read back my clearance again...

    Does IFR XC expire?

I did my IFR XC in 2011, will this still be valid for a checkride within the next month or two? I can't find any reference to it "expiring" so I assume it's technically fine. Would it be a good idea to do another one to avoid any issues or am I all set?

    Practice Test Question

I'm looking at this question in a practice test. Here's a copy I found online: http://www.exams4pilots.org/faatest.cgi?m=cv&b=inst_rat&q=5.4.5.6.9.A.1 It says the correct answer is position 7 and 11. I thought it was 7 only. In position 11, I thought there would be reverse sensing at this...

    Flying VFR into BWI?

Hi Folks - I have been looking into flying VFR (a Cherokee) into BWI in order to pick up a friend from a commercial flight. I searched online and found some posts from several years ago asking the same question. It seems like the place is/was very GA friendly - and they even have a separate GA...

    Hello

Hey everyone - I've been lurking for a bit, so I figured I'd say hi! I already know some of you from another board, but it looks like things are a bit more active over here. I'm a pretty new pilot, just got my PPL about 3 months ago and I'm right around 100 hours. Most of my time is in...
