    Amelia... but not TIGHAR

Ok, they are recreating Beech-18 with the period equipement but what about Itasca and her equipement? Any recreation here? And how do they know the signal strength that Itasca was receiving, do they have such relevant data?

    BMW Z3 Roadster

Actually there are a few of them on autotrader (low mileage cars) and this price doesn't seem out of line, it is actually quite reasonable (assuming the car is clean). You are right, I checked, there was 1.9l 4-cyl made, I personally would never get it, you can have 2.3 or 2.8 Z3s in the...

    BMW Z3 Roadster

I have had 2001 Z3 with 6-cylinder 3.0 L engine, great car, manual, very few issues, right now at 78 K miles. 4 cyl?? really, I thought they were only 6 cyl. This '4 cyl' seems suspect to me.

    When to start Instrument training?

No, it is natural to start getting IFR instruction and then take your written when ready, when your instructor signs you off for the test. You will be getting a better understanding of regulations, how the system works in practice and this way you have better chance to score higher on your...

    Torn retina anyone?

Yes, torn retina was diagnosed in my eye but I was told the typical laser surgery doesn't apply in my case, the tear is too small. Side effects - some large floater and million little 'droplets' in my view. Now, 3 weeks later all those droplets are practically gone but some ugly floater remains.

    Ford v Ferrari

I was really surprised last night how good the movie "Ford v Ferrari" is (based on true story). I was afraid the movie will be sort of one-dimensional repeat of something like Paul Newman's 1969 "Winning" (which I thing was a mediocre movie despite excellent cast) but this one is outstanding...

John F Kennedy Jr’s style was sloppy

As we know from countless accidents caused by spatial disorientation at night over water no amount of training may be "enough". Recently Japan lost their first F-35 in exact same manner - pilot flew it at night into water. This pilot had over 3200 hrs. Japan Air Force say that spatial...

John F Kennedy Jr’s style was sloppy

No. No requirement for visual horizon, you must have 3 mile visibility, that is all. “To do it safely” that may be your own safety factor but it has nothing to do with regulations. By using your own “safety” factors you may refuse to fly at night or fly over mountains with single engine but it...

John F Kennedy Jr’s style was sloppy

VFR-only pilots routinely fly at night and often don't have any horizon (I did a few such flights myself). Nothing illegal about that. He flew may times between both airports, sometimes at night, some even in IMC (or simulated IMC) with instructor. If he himself in his gut feeling wasn't capable...

John F Kennedy Jr’s style was sloppy

I see nothing "macho" here to decide on a 'solo' flight. Actually I recall his pilot record was criticized as too much dependence on instructors. The weather was VFR. I see no "bad" decision here either. Whether he was night current I don't recall, I suspect he was, he was very much a pilot by...

    "The Irishman" and aviation

That's true, if they can edit-in buildings they could certainly edit-in one square foot of a panel.

    "The Irishman" and aviation

So what would be the role of a good tech editor? Spot such errors and delete the footage? Or find better aircraft?

I share the sentiment. The WSJ review called it a 'masterpiece', I think it is a stretch.

    "The Irishman" and aviation

Anyone has seen "The Irishman" already? The latest Martin Scorsese Netflix movie about the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, the Teamsters, etc. There is a GA sequence in this movie, starts at about 2:34:XX, it features some twin engine airplane, could not readily recognize if it was Piper, Beech...

When to configure airplane for landing during precision approach?

I was actually surprised when I looked at performance landing data for an SR22 - 100% or 50% flaps the difference in required landing distance is minimal - 10% or even less.

When to configure airplane for landing during precision approach?

Ask your instructor how to do it, it may depend on the airplane, in the Cirrus that wouldn’t be the right technique, also if you break out of clouds at lower than 500 AGL I was always taught that (in Cirrus) it is too late to start deploying flaps, you are too low and flaps deployment is highly...
