    Mountain Flying Training near Denver

Western Air's mountain course is good; I flew with Howard. I'd recommend going with the least powerful/capable airplane they have...you'll get more out of the course that way and really learn to milk the airplane for everything it's got.

    New Headset- Preflight function check

Some home receivers and amplifiers have large audio jacks for headphones that are the same style as a headset's...just make sure to start with the volume at 0. You can also do this with a guitar/bass amp. Unfortunately this doesn't help you test the microphone.

I believe it was Allegheny Reservoir, just ENE of Brokenstraw (P15).

Hm...had to look that one up. N1UL - I hope everyone's ok! I didn't see it there, probably taken away for salvage already. http://www.baaa-acro.com/Fiches%20d%27accidents/2011/N1UL.htm

    Turf & Fuel: XC

Normal life has a funny way of waiting for you with things to do when you come back after leaving it for a while :wink2: The trip was a success! I was not able to land at all grass strips, but found quite a few. Here's a quick summary: Centennial, CO: APA - Home. Holdrege, NE: HDE - Quiet...

    Turf & Fuel: XC

Diana - your trip looks like it was too much fun! I'll have to imitate you someday and do a much longer loop. Any last minute advice, having been there before? Kind of dreading later in the day when leg cramps set in!

    Turf & Fuel: XC

Wow, this is a great way to search! Taking off tomorrow mid-day. I've decided not to try and land on turf crossing pavement unless it's a known airport. Flying a Pitts S-2B, so the bungees can take quite a bit, but there's not much clearance for the wheelpants. Latest route: Tomorrow, HDE I75...

    How common is motion sickness?

It's definitely a tolerance thing, and goes away with repetition. A big part of nausea is mental. If you're comfortable, low anxiety, and have seen the situation before, chances are you'll be fine. Once it starts find an air vent, look at the horizon, and fly straight and level (with you at the...

    Turf & Fuel: XC

Thank you all for the suggestions, I'll see if I can incorporate them. When there's a hard runway intersecting a turf runway, can you be sure there's no lip that will catch your tires? Makes me a little nervous thinking of hitting a curb on roll-out...

Ah, dredging up old knowledge, I think you're right about the tick marks, nonetheless they're not always accurate. SYF is a little close, may have to do a day trip there sometime. CEK is a little far, maybe one of these on the way back? I'll have to check out the links later tonight, thanks...

    Turf & Fuel: XC

I'm planning a flight next week from Denver Centennial to upstate NY. My range is right around 250NM before having to re-fuel, so there will be a number of stops. I'm thinking it could be fun to land only at grass/turf strips along the way...but am having difficulty locating this [rare]...

Non-IFR Clearance into the flight levels

Helpful info! Thanks. I suppose I was looking for a simpler answer for a one-off flight trial without having to submit for a waiver. Guess some more research is in order. I am instrument rated, but the aircraft is not (and never will be). Might just have to keep it under FL180. :)

Non-IFR Clearance into the flight levels

Here's a topic I've been wondering about (maybe you sailplane pilots can chime in): How do gliders go about getting a clearance to soar above 18,000'? How is the request phrased to center, and what regs cover it? On a related note, I'm interested in taking my airplane to its service ceiling...

    Mountain Training Course

Yet another vote for Western Air at BJC. It's a fun course to fly, especially in a 172 where you have to work for your lift :cheerswine:

    Tips

Not sure I can vouch for the keys in the baggage compartment trick. I did that on the Cirrus once with the main doors locked...had to borrow some welding wire and a flat screwdriver from the FBO to get the compartment door open! Still haven't heard the end of that one.

    Headset chin strap

For a very quick fix paracord works great, and thick enough to not be uncomfortable. At a dime a foot, it's hard to beat the price too!

    Berkut Down

Loveland, CO - Jet powered Berkut crash lands short of airfield. As usual, the details from different news sources don't make any sense, and don't agree. If everything is taken at face value: The engine exploded, the airframe fell apart, a wing fell off, the pilot guided it to a safe off-field...

    TSA & Chutes

Thanks for all the responses! I spoke with a TSA screener who said he sees emergency chutes often, and rarely has to open one. It's their policy however that if their alarm is triggered, it has to be unpacked. It took about a month, but here is the response from the TSA from the same question...

    TSA & Chutes

Anyone ever traveled on the airlines with an emergency parachute as a carry on? The TSA site covers skydiving rigs, and says that they may have to be unpacked, but with the help of the owner. Re-packing an emergency chute can only be done by a rigger, and costs quite a bit more. I submitted a...
