    Basement Sump Pump Question [NA]

Re: Backup pump This one is 1:1 Uses 1 gal. of water to pump 1 gal. out of sump. In Dayton, that could get real pricey. But it does meet the long-term reliability requirement. http://www.do-it-yourself-pumps.com/homeguard.htm

    Basement Sump Pump Question [NA]

Backup pump From my earlier post: "Electricity is reliable enough at my location for a second electric pump, or for maximum reliability, a domestic-water-line-powered pump." My electric is underground from a sub-station and in 23 years we haven't had any storm-related outages (that doesn't...

    Planning my longest XC yet

long range seats I bought the Oregon Aero seat cushions with the lumbar support option and they really do the job. Wife and neighbor borrowed them for 14 hours of poll duty recently and came home raving. I quickly put them back in the airplane. http://www.oregonaero.com/p24_2001.htm...

    Basement Sump Pump Question [NA]

Sump discharge Agreed. At the top of the pipe from the discharge valve there should be some variation of an inverted "U" and the discharge pipe should slope away from the house. On mine the 1 1/2" PVC discharge pipe(same size as comes out of the backflow preventer valve) is underground...

    Basement Sump Pump Question [NA]

Tethered float switches 23 years with a hard-working sump pump, starting when the builder failed to knock out the plugs in the plastic basin and flooded the basement on Thanksgiving Day, 1984. My first pump switches lasted about 4 years. When I couldn't find replacement switches, I bought the...

WAAS + Autopilot = higher risk of midairs?

GPS and Midairs -snip- Then again... we're not hearing of mid-airs attributed to this, so maybe its not the issue I'm imagining it might be. How soon we forget- Brazil: Gol Airlines' B-737-800 and an Excelaire Legacy 600 over the Amazon jungle last September [2006]...

Three killed in Idaho 172 - 172 crash

Straight-In "Jerks" First, if you don't agree that a straight-in approach is safest for everyone in the pattern, then we're approaching this topic from very different directions with a strong probability of misunderstanding. With safety first, courtesy and common sense prevail in my flying...

Three killed in Idaho 172 - 172 crash

Straight Ins Not only does it not violate the standards in the AIM, straight-ins are encouraged by the regulations. Read Deakin's AvWeb column which discusses the regulations: http://www.avweb.com/news/pelican/182100-1.html Personally I have found in my 44 years of flying that straight-ins...

    More oil system problems

Not familiar with Pipers, but Cessnas have flexible baffle seals. Defects or mis-installation can cause high oil temps.

    Erasing a file

Try using Safe Mode Try a reboot, press F8 at the prompt [be loaded and locked, it's not there for long], and boot up in Safe Mode. Erase the file in Windows. [Suggestion I haven't personally tried, but done similar things in Safe Mode]

    Thoughts on backup AI

Jakoby apparently took off with his electric TC not operating, and subsequently suffered a vacuum failure. While the Wx wasn't that bad- 2-1/2 miles of visibility, light rain and mist, 600 foot scattered, 1,300 foot broken, and he reportedly suffered the failure at 900 ft. Unfortunately he...

Brazil court releases Long Island pilots' passports

It's Portugese, and I found it here: http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=246031&page=47 which is a thread I've been following since the accident. A lot of chaff to be sorted thru, but there are Brazilians on the forum, and it often makes interesting reading to get the full gamut of...

Brazil court releases Long Island pilots' passports

It's not done yet. Original report- http://oglobo.globo.com/pais/mat/2006/12/05/286902765.asp The Federal Police may still have something to say about this.

    Thoughts on backup AI

Instrument redundancy I went thru this analysis back in late 1999 not long after the Jakoby accident. I figured that if the Bonanza Society's recognized expert in partial panel flight couldn't handle it with the whiskey compass, what chance did I have...

    King Air gear-up landing

Found the subject clip dated 5/5/06 on this site, along with many other interesting and sometimes disturbing GA videos: http://www.alexisparkinn.com/general_aviation_videos.htm Still researching why no emergency gear blow-down.

    King Air gear-up landing

Where was the blow-down? That size airplane typically has a gear emergency blow-down option, one-time use not dependent upon hydraulics. Anyone know if it was installed and if so, why it didn't work? Given enough notice to have both helicopter & ground camera coverage by CNN, I was surprised...

    TSA follies, Part 8,016

Right, Bill. No terrorists out there trying in the US. As 2 guys with a rifle in a beater car showed, it's so easy that if anyone who tried could do it. Elsewhere in the world, business as usual. Is the 'War on Terror' a political scam based on "Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid"?

    Losing Engine On Takeoff

You are joined in this by such luminaries as John Deakin, who talked about this in his AvWeb series on turbocharged engine management, pointing out that it also keeps the turbocharger cool, avoiding the high temperatures which tend to be associated with climb. Dr. Bruce can speak better than I...
