    L-39 or Spitfire?

I've an opportunity to fly either the L-39, the single engine jet fighter/trainer, or the historic British Spitfire. I can afford one or the other and I don't know if I'll have another chance to fly them again. Which would you fly? If cost is a concern, as it is most certainly is for me, the...

    Question about Barometric Pressure

Just finished a mountain flying and a back country flying course in CO. I am surprised how much the pressure changed between reporting stations that aren't very far apart, often between 15 and 50 miles. The weather is clear, no fronts, stable air - light winds for a couple of days, no frontal...

    Mad - V1 - Dpk altitude assignement

Hi, I fly from NH to LI, NY often IFR. NY Approach always instructs me to descend to 4,000 feet approaching Madison VOR and thus, to cross the LI Sound at an altitude too low to glide to either side from the middle of the Sound in my Archer. The V1 crossing is 23.5 miles across the Long Island...

    Weather Question

I've noticed that the highest cloud cover reported seems to peak out at 25000 feet. I'm curious, is there a meteorological reason why bases don't form higher than 25000, or do the ASOS/AWOS systems simply not report higher than 25000?

    TAS and the Yellow Arc

Hi, I fly northern NH in the winter. It's not uncommon to fly on a very cold winter day where the density altitude is minus 2000 feet. The plane's AS indicator yellow arc starts at 126 knots. When calculating TAS using the AS indicator, the plane TAS can be 133+ knots. Yet AS needle is...

    What forms layers of clouds?

Hi, I've seen two and three layers of clouds in stable air up to 12,500 feet, the highest I've flown. Do layers of clouds form during inversions, only? Is there mathematical formula which would predict if layers are likely?

    Density Altitude

Hi, we all know the rules and issues related to high altitude flying. Here is my question: If you depart an airport at sea level on a hot Summer day, and the density altitude is 2000 feet, and you climb to 10,000 feet, are you effectively at 12,000 feet?

Autopilots and instrument approaches (dumb question)

Hi, how does one log an approach in both IMC and simulated instrument conditions while using an autopilot?

    Radio static

We have an Archer II and both radios have static through the speakers/headsets when the engine is running. We borrowed a new Garmin 530 and installed it and the static continued. We've turned on and off everything from the intercom to cycling the magnetos. We've replaced the antenna cables...
