Gear Up Landing Right in Front of Me

So your point was that it costs to much money? I did miss that point entirely. It's a good point, and answers the question why GA is so far behind I guess. Aircraft owners SHOULD complain about the cost of ABS-B because it is ridiculous how much it costs. I suspect it costs so much because...

Gear Up Landing Right in Front of Me

Like I said...a smart engineer at MIT could come up with LOTS of great ways. My phone does amazing things that are automatic. It is wonderful. They were thought up by really smart people. Do you know that when I open up my computer, the browser history that was on my phone automatically shows...

The perfect GA airplane, in my opinion (looking for critique)

I am always baffled by this idea...and it is due to complete ignorance (on my part). Can someone give some good detail on this? If I am flying over land that has no great landing spot (which is a LOT of area...like populated areas, or mountains, or trees)...how is a parachute not a better...

My PPL Checkride Notes From 2016. Hope It Helps

When I did my check ride - I had not practiced an emergency descent on fire ever. I had no idea what to do. It's pretty easy if you practice, or if someone just tells you what to do. I don't think that was part of the standards before the change. My examiner told me after that lots of...

Gear Up Landing Right in Front of Me

I'm always so suprised at how general aviation is so far behind on possible technology that would make things 1000x safer. I know it is a money issue...but still. It's like the back up rear view camera - every car should have one. How hard would it be for a bunch of smart engineers to come up...

Title 4 student aid for flight training

Background - I need to borrow some Title 4 funds because the Reserves is going to pay it off for me (the amount Reserves will give me is more than my current liability - so I want to borrow more to the max they will pay off). I don't want to just take random college classes - I would like to...

    fatal crash in San Diego

Well I appreciate the feedback - Another possible dumb question - But... If you ARE going to put down on a freeway, I know intuitively you would go with traffic, but perhaps it makes more sense to land against traffic? I assume drivers would have PLENTY of visual opportunity to see you coming...

    fatal crash in San Diego

At what point do you think you can turn around and make it back to the airfield? Is there any good rule-of-thumb on this?

    fatal crash in San Diego

A fatal crash happened in my town yesterday. I got my pilot's license last year, and stopped flying right after. I have flown one time. My goal is to get IFR someday - but I gotta tell ya - stories like this scare me. Watch the video of this plane - and then I have several questions for...

Recently got my PPL - now studying for instrument rating

Got my PPL in October - haven't flown since (money issues). But I am studying for instrument rating. A question occurred to me that I have never thought about. It is regarding barometric pressures. The book says that for every 1000ft, the barometric pressure (with regards to mmHg) changes...

What was the most unpleasant part of training for you?

Check-ride sucked. I had a great examiner though. After the exam, he taught me a lot (and also explained why he couldn't teach during the exam). I'm really surprised I passed, but I'm not complaining.

    Standard altitudes

Hank, Thanks for the answer. Makes sense to me. I think significant digits in the altimeter is probably 3, so like you mentioned, there is already built in a '150 spread just on the nature of non-precise instrument.

Buying a 150 to get PPL, few questions

Brilliant idea (152). I wish I would have done this. For one, gallons/hr is better than a 172, and way cheaper hourly run rate than a rental. Plus, the 152 flies slower, so hours build up quicker. finally, you can sell the plan when done - probably for exactly what you paid for it...

    Standard altitudes

Regardless, no one has explained to me the logic of having everyone fly at the exact same altitude. Saying "well it's worked in the past" is not a great answer as to why it can't be improved, or why was decided in the first place. If you have planes in a small space - why is it better to...

    stratus and tethered iphone

By the way - using Fltplan GO, tethered, up in the air - breadcrumbs tracks my position - so it MAY be getting GPS data from my phone. However, strangely, on the ground - without my iPhone tethered, my iPad (that doesn't have GPS) also tracks my position (even with WIFI turned off). It is very...

    Stratux vs

I need to get an external GPS/ADS-B IN. Stratux website says that AHRS is in development. If you look at TheSquawkShoppe's build, it does seem to indicate it has AHRS. I'm not sure what chipset they add to give solid-state gyroscope. Questions: 1. Has anyone used Stratux with an...

EFB comparison - Fltplan GO vs

First the background - I don't have an external GPS (yet), but will want one and I like the idea of AHRS. However, I just got my PPL SEL - so am not IR, but will start working on it. I didn't use my iPad until I got my license (actually started using it about 2 weeks before my checkride) -...

    Standard altitudes

You all seriously think it is better to tell everyone to be on the same level of X500? You don't think a range would be better - so say all west going VFR traffic : even X150-X850 , east bound : odd X150-X850? A plane is less than 10 ft high. That is a lot of possible levels that would...
