    Icing forecast FIP vertical resolution

The icing forecast of AWC is at https://aviationweather.gov/gfa/#ice Leidos icing forecast is at https://www.1800wxbrief.com/Website/interactiveMap. You have to click the checkboxes of the product you are interested in, then have a slider for each 1000ft altitude.

    Icing forecast FIP vertical resolution

Aviationweather.org shows vertical resolution of the icing forecast product (FIP) in 3000 feet increments. Leidos shows it in 1000 feet increments. Is Leidos’ 1000 feet resolution just interpolated between the 3000 feet resolution or does the FIP computer model indeed produce a 1000 feet...

What not to do with TKS...

TKS 406B fluid data sheet states that the freezing point is -60C. Why would it congeal at -43C?

If you had 3 months to travel in your plane, where would you go?

How do you solve the last mile problem? Many smaller airports have no rental cars, or rental cars are all booked. Uber/Lyft is not available in smaller towns.

    Flight Stream 510 not working

The GFC500 cable guide looks like plastic. Would the cable not just chafe through?

using Foreflight in a Garmin plane?

Garmin Pilot records enormous amount of parameters emitted by various Garmin avionics devices. For example, the G3X Touch/GFC 500/GTN combo emits around ~50 parameters every second. These data are only available via Garmin Pilot and FlightStream and uploaded to the Garmin web site automatically...

GTN 750 xi: Selecting alternate procedure during missed approach

Thank you, @midlifeflyer! I wonder what the rational is. For OLM RNAV 17, CORER is 5 miles out, before CETRA becomes the active waypoint. For approaches where the next waypoint is the MAP hold point, I can load the alternate approach immediately.

GTN 750 xi: Selecting alternate procedure during missed approach

No, this is not what I am seeing. I am beyond the MAP. I.e. in the example above I am right before CORER, which is about 3 miles beyond the MAP, or at a location where I would expect the alternate procedure to be loadable. Note, I can load and activate it, but that’s not what I want.

GTN 750 xi: Selecting alternate procedure during missed approach

The GTN 750xi allows to load an alternative procedure during a missed approach procedure. However, in some situations, the “Load Approach” button to load an alternative approach during a missed approach is greyed out. For example, when flying the missing approach for KOLM RNAV GPS 17. See...

Tires: how old is too old?

Please see attached maintenance guide from Good Year. Pages 26 to 36 describe with pictures all the conditions requiring replacement, beyond just cracks and punctures. If none of these conditions apply to your tires, I would continue using them.

Baja - Mexico charts and insurance

Thank you murphey! I looked at the Jeppesen online store, and they just discontinued Mexico paper VFR charts in 2022. But Garmin has a single update for Latin America for the G3X for $39. Problem solved. Thank you Clip4. My insurance agent just got back to me and said that the issue is that...

Baja - Mexico charts and insurance

Last time I flew to Baja in 2016 WAC charts existed and I did not get any additional insurance for Mexico, since my insurance covered Mexico. Customs in San Felipe was easy; however, the authorities did look at everything, including my insurance contract. It did not look like rubber stamping...

    Propeller windmilling, the truth

You are also doing work with a "flat plate" by creating much more turbulence. A windmilling prop has lower AoA, hence less drag. Therefore, instead of wasting energy creating turbulence, the windmilling prop uses the energy to turn the engine. Looking at it from an energy budget point of view...

    Lycoming IO-54O Cyl #6 puzzle

I was able to re-position my plane to my home airport. Same issue again during descent from about 2000 feet #6 goes cold at minute 00:48. However, the engine monitor data now show something it didn't show before: A zick-zack pattern with regular 27 second periodicity. See blue line of EGT plot...

Yes, it runs rough and vibrates. We did swap temp probes and injector to eliminate them as a reason. See point [5] and [6] above.

    Lycoming IO-54O Cyl #6 puzzle

Hello, my #6 cyl exhibits the following problem: It has gone cold on two recent flights during descent. Engine is running rough when it is going cold. See two attached engine monitor plots. What has been done and excluded by the mechanic are the following items: [1] Check if valve is stuck...
