Fatality Crash KHOU looks like a Cirrus

The first time I can clearly see the shadow is when it clears that propane tank. The plane is clearly rotating counterclockwise from this point until it hits the car. You can step through the vid frame by frame here: http://rowvid.com/?v=9CE7gHkpsgE

Lead Radial on chart but no DME arc

The ILS or LOC RWY 29R into KSCK has a lead radial of 112 off of the ECA VOR. Why is this? It's not a DME arc. I'm guessing it's to give you a heads up that you're going to intercept the localizer if you're inbound from the MOD VOR IAF, but the 29 degree intercept angle isn't overly aggressive...

    Lost comms question.

I've lost comms 3 times in 3 different planes. Used cell and handheld to work things out. All in VMC , one at night. It happens! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Passed my commercial... Best CFI study materials?

I'm in the same boat, and am studying the Airplane instructors handbook, airplane flying manual, AIM and phak. All downloadable from the FAA for free and guaranteed to put you to sleep. I make notes on the pdfs with a program called skim (mac only) and then put those notes into a flashcard...

    Thank God for ADS-B

I pulled up the most recent 15 midairs from the ASI database, and they all occurred in Day VMC conditions. The Mark I eyeball has some serious, known deficiencies. I don't understand the argument against additional SA in regards to traffic as provided by ADS-B, unless you have some sort of sick...

    ZOA Question

It's actually near Mather (KMHR). I was able to do a tour there, it was exactly what I expected. Cool to put faces to voices.

    Controllers of the magenta line...

Shouldn't we change the title to "Pilots who don't understand the regulations"? The FAA often shows a lack of common sense, and I've experienced it firsthand, but this doesn't fall under that category. SVFR exists exactly for this reason.

    "Position Checks"

I was trained to respond this way, so I do. I've had ATC respond 'position as reported' when picking up flight following, so I guess it's a 2 way street? It seems worth the effort to confirm they're looking at the right plane. I fly/train in a moderately busy airspace and I've been run right...

What would make you rent more?

Discount on block time. Discount for off hours (weekday eves). The owner of the plane that currently fly a couple of times a week gave me a checkmate checklist and Piper hat as a thank you. It was a thoughtful gesture.

Arrow makes emergency landing on I-540 in Raleigh

Pilot has posted on a different aviation discussion group about the incident and his decision to talk to the media to try to control the tone of the reporting. He mentioned that the landing was rougher than he wished due to having to ditch under the power lines, leading to gear damage.

    Aerial photo used commercially

Correct, I was referring to your situation. Another point that you might not understand is that a company Facebook page is advertising. We're not talking about an individual page filled with duckface selfies. I think it's pretty clear that advertising is commercial photography.

    Aerial photo used commercially

This letter implies that it is not incidental, and you were likely in violation. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/agc/pol_adjudication/agc200/interpretations/data/interps/2010/perry%20-%20(2010)%20legal%20interpretation.pdf

    Aerial photo used commercially

If these pictures end up in brochures or printed advertising material, does that change anyone's opinion? I think the FAA could make a case that the purpose of the flight was for aerial photography used in commercial advertising materials. Compensation is received in the form of your salary...

    steam v TV

I'll take a G1000 any day of the week and twice on Sunday hand flying in IMC. The large AI, the HSI and the RMI all in one compact area to scan are all plusses to me. I notice that the median age in that study was 47. I wonder if those of us who grew up playing flight sim on PCs that use EADIs...

That article is poorly written and wouldn't pass muster in my wife's 5th grade class. What studies is he referring to and where is he getting his numbers? Since I was curious, I tracked down a NTSB study and found this interesting: "Over the entire period from 2002 through 2008, aircraft in...

GPS Direct or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Magenta Line

Must have been the same folks that wrote the Instrument Procedures Handbook, too. From page 1-25: "If you cannot comply with a SID, if you do not possess the charted SID procedure, or if you simply do not wish to use SIDs, include the statement “NO SIDs” in the remarks section of your...
