    Afraid to fly

Rose, just a note on the mike-fright. I had it big time when I was training. I dreaded making those calls. Two things cured me. 1) A trip to tour the local control tower. (I found out they weren't such scary monsters after all!) 2) An ASA book by Bob Gardner that a CFI recommended to me...

Flight Training Article - Jesse and David

Re: Way to go JESSE! Hey all, Sue Smith here. Thanks for the kind words about the article. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It wouldn't exist without Jesse and David and a big thanks for Diz for sharing the story with me. When she told me about it, I knew immediately that I wanted to do this. It...

    My quest for my license

Congratulations for taking the first step towards something that will change your life forever! I trained in a Piper Warrior. It's a fun and reliable plane to fly. I'm glad you have decided to journal your training. I did that as well when I was training. I have every lesson...

    No run-up on taxiways

If I were already out there I probably would have chosen #4 and then just put a note in my AFD for the next time. I wouldn't feel comfortable parking on the runway. (No review mirrors)! How did you handle it?

    Broke the 100 Hour Mark

Yes, I had the shirt cutting ceremony and my instructor kept my "shirt tail" and told me he would fill out the date, etc and give it back to me. I soon forgot about it. About a month or so later, he presented me with the shirt tail with a decal complete with an image of my solo airplane, the...

    Broke the 100 Hour Mark

An FBO near here has both the DA20 and DA40 available. I'd probably initially fly the DA20 as the rent is much more affordable.

    Broke the 100 Hour Mark

Hi Kimberly, Congrats! I am right behind you. I have about 95 hours logged right now. Flying rocks doesn't it? I only wish I had started long ago. What do you fly? The one day that tops them all on my list was my first solo. 6/23/09. Even more so then the day I got my ticket. I...

Why its important to follow the checklist.

My embarrassing story... I was taking up two friends for their maiden flight. Although I always use my checklist, I somehow neglected to lock the primer. If you have ever done this, you know that the results are ugly. The engine vibrated so badly on start up that I think a couple of my...

    Preventing Go-Around Accidents

Hi Ed, I have no problem landing the Piper with full flaps. Whether I do or not depends on the winds. The 150 is an entirely different animal. That thing drops like a rock with 40 degree flaps and I use full flaps only when I know I have the runway made. The POH even states you should...

    Preventing Go-Around Accidents

I compare flying the 150 to flying a leaf. It's a fun little airplane, but you really have to "fly" it! You are right about full flaps. Your story is funny but typical in our world. You can talk to 100 pilots about any given subject and get 100 different opinions. I love it.

    Preventing Go-Around Accidents

This is a great community and I'm just learning my way around. So much interesting information and I am enjoying reading various opinions on many subjects. I think it's somewhat personal preference and what you feel comfortable with, however I respectfully disagree with your comment...

    Preventing Go-Around Accidents

Hi all. I am new here. (First post!) My two cents on go arounds. I trained in a Piper Warrior and was recently checked out in a C150. There is a huge difference in the workload of a go around between the Piper and the Cessna. I am well prepared, as I did a lot of touch and go practice in...
