So Bill Gates is part-owner of Signature?

CP/M wasn't too bad, though I actually started with SSB-DOS, an enhancement of the SWTPC DOS for their 6800 based system, which was my first computer. DR-DOS was much better than MS-DOS and their GEM GUI was far superior to the earliest versions of WinDoze.

Will MSFS ever be more than a toy?

I downloaded and installed that, but the instructions just say to start X-Plane and adjust the positions of the 7 new entries, but I can't figure out how to do that. What's the trick there?

    Sad airplane thread

I looked at a sad barn-find Aeronca Chief last weekend. Less than 1100TT, but out of annual since 1998,hasn't been run since 2005, and has 40+ yr old cotton fabric. Even if they gave it to me it would take $30-35k to restore.

T-6, WACO or Mustang flight for Christmas?

I've got about 45 minutes dual in a T-6 and I'd do that again in a minute.

    What Are You Reading?

Just finished "Zero 3 Bravo" by Mariana Gosnell. It's a good aviation travelogue in the manner of "Flight of Passage", except in a Luscombe instead of a Cub.

4 hour pilot with stupid questions

In Iowa there are no landing fees at any of the airports that I'm aware of after spending 25 years on two airport commissions. Ramp fees at KCID and KDSM are waived with a fuel purchase. At almost all public airports elsewhere in the state the only fees you might run into would be a charge...

    Rechargeable hearing aids

My 6 or so year old BTEs died a couple of months ago. While trying to decide on what I wanted to do, I started researching on-line hearing aids, and started getting lots of ads from differrent companies. Just as an interim, I bought a set of in-ear rechargeable EP3s from Audien Hearing for...

Getting my Private Pilot Certificate in a Luscombe.

Congratulations, Jay. Your story has been inspirational. I learned to fly and soloed in a Luscombe 8F 40 years ago, but got my PPL in a C150. I was about to bust medical due to HBP a couple of years later so I let it lapse and quit flying until the light-sport license came about. I bought...

    What's the coolest airplane...

In memory of NC86196 (9/6/1946-7/11/2011) I'd first claim my Chief, my first and only plane of my own, but from a really cool status, probably the NATG SNJ-5 I flew a few years back.

How I solved the region's power failure

We bought a 6kw generator after the great flood of '08 when our power was out for several days, so it was ready and waiting when we got hit with 125 mph winds on Monday. Powered up the deep-freeze, the refrigerator, the microwave, and the DSL modem & wireless router which brought life mostly...

    Derecho damage at Vinton, IA

Got an A/P in today to do an estimate for the insurance. Unfortunately, the closer we look, the more damage we find. Both spars on the right wing are broken, along with multiple ribs...not sure on the left wing. There's also some fuselage damage that will be hard to know the extent of until the...

    I'm weird

Back when I could legally fly at night I loved to do it. I know just what you mean about the beauty of the lights at landing. Can't do that anymore unfortunately...and since the storm on Monday it looks like it will be a long time before I can fly at all. :-(

    Derecho damage at Vinton, IA

Three planes probably totalled from an insurance standpoint; an RV, a Musketeer, and my Chief. An Air Tractor was pulled off its tiedowns and blown a couple hundred feet but appears to be ferryable. One hangar destroyed, one badly damaged, and 5 hangar doors blown out with one more sprung. We...

    Ham Radio

W0FG here; OF 20-wpm Extra, mostly inactive now except for the APRS rig in the pickup. Used to be a fairly serious DX'er, 95% on CW....kind of gave it up after I got past 275 countries worked. I probably have 125 or so confirmed on QRP power with a Yaesu FT-817 and 25 or 30 countries worked on...
