Continuing on with the grass strip tour

I've traveled from PA to the western half of the country twice in the past month in the Aztec, but I was in a hurry both times. :)
I saw that. :) We have different kinds of adventures. I try not to hurry anymore...I'm old and slow. :D

You're welcome Diana.

The data comes from the FAA's FADDS database. I've been playing with different ways to present it. This motivated me to search by fuel availability.
I don't know what the FADDS database is, but it sure is nice that you figured out a way to make it useful in this way.

The other thing that might help your trip is the name and phone number of the contact person for the private airports in that list. Yours and Tom's are in there.
Sometimes I wonder if that will ever come back to bite us that our info is out there, like on AirNav, and on Flitesoft.

And I couldn't make this event last August...wanted to...but life got in the way...I'm quite confident that a good time was had by all!

You MUST make it there. All things considered, it's the neatest place I've been. Moontown is a close second but Shadetree takes the cake.

Just noticed you have Roy E. Ray International, Bayou la Batre AL on the list. Wonderful place!! Great hospitality, fabulous collection of airplanes, and some of the funnest people you'll ever meet-- or maybe you already know that, which is why it's on your list?

I always look forward to my visits to Mobile, because it usually involves a stop by Roy E. Ray, and maybe a hop and some upside-down time in some fine old airplane, courtesy of some Grice brothers.

Amelia, thank you so much for the information! I've been asking on several different forums about this airport (even last time I planned this trip in 2007) and have not gotten any responses from anyone before! I don't know a thing about the airport...it just intrigued me and I thought I'd check it out.

From the sounds of it, this is my kinda airport! I appreciate hearing from someone who has been there. Thank you! :) It is definitely on my list of "must see" airports now.

Diana,

What day are you planning on leaving on your trip? I was thinking I may be passing through your neck of the woods on May 1st.

Barb

Barb, are you still coming by on May 1st? We hope so. I'm probably not leaving until the next week or the weekend after.

No, I've had to postpone it. I'm going towards the middle of September. I'll give you a heads up when it gets closer. Turns out there are less tornados and things in the fall! and I have a meeting I want to go to in Pensacola in early Oct. So California is still pretty much on the way to there.

i love the "Barb Doctrine" of Cross Country Flying

Wow! The past two days I have experienced southern hospitality at it's finest!

Steve, thanks for everything, including the flight. :) It was fun meeting Brad at your airport.

I'm at Shade Tree. Lovely and fun people! We're all flying to 5R7 later. Got a Stearman ride just before sunset. What a great little airport.

Can't get cell reception. Emails won't go out, but wifi works great. I have pictures of Steve, but can't email them to him for approval yet.

Gotta go have morning coffee with my new friends. I love it here! :)

Joe,

That KMZ file is amazing. I always wanted to do a grass field tour down the east coast say from Maine to South Carolina.

Any chance you can make a file for me, say 500 miles around KISP?

Thanks.

Glad you made it in. I certainly enjoyed the visit, too. You're always welcome when you're in the area. I know Brad would like to take an acro ride....:)

Skies are clearing here now after a narrow but active line of thunderstorms came through before sunrise. We woke up to a tremendous boom around 5am and it appears the deep fringe antenna took a hit as the signal amplifiers are toast despite having a lightning arrestor. Also the tv in the living room is fried so it looks like the flat screen will be here sooner than planned. Oddly, none of the other electronics on the same circuit were affected.

Skies are clearing so I should be able to make the crawdad boil for lunch and then run up to Starkville to get Kathleen for a suprise Mom's Day visit.

If 5R7 ends early there is also a fly-in up at Brewton, AL (12J) today. 4 different events within striking distance today and I can only make one or two. I need a faster plane.....;)

Below is posted w/o persmission....lol

Well that grass strip Diana is landing on looks suspiciously like pavement... I'm just sayin'!:D

Sounds like sabotage. Did someone want a new tv? lol.

Thanks John, but it's just a way to search and display a public FAA database.

Attached is a kmz of all grass strips within 500nm of kisp with fuel, public and private.

Since this has come up a few times, I've attached a kmz of all the grass or dirt strips in the US with fuel.

Diana, if it's not too late...but I'm afraid it is...tell Danny & Janet HI for me!
Tim, we've been talking about you. :D I'll tell them tomorrow morning. It's been an incredible visit here. Got a ride in their new Stearman yesterday. Flew with Janet in the Citabria today and then she gave me a ride in her Varga Cachina (sp?)and then I rode in an RV-8 and then in a Navion. I just love these people here! They are so much fun! And they have been so generous and made me feel so welcome.

We flew over to Roy E. Ray this afternoon and met some more neat people. Planning to head west over the swamp tomorrow. I'll post some photos when I have time.

I know Brad would like to take an acro ride....:)
 If we could only draw him out of his shell. :D I really enjoyed meeting him.

I hope that all worked out for you guys. :)

Nice shot! And it was flattering, too. :D

I'll try to get those photos of you emailed tomorrow when I get to a different wifi.

Don't believe a word they say. I've never been there.

They're the best, it's the type of little airfield that everyone wishes they were based at! Oh, the stories I could tell from the 4 months I was there...but I won't!

I already have a few of those now after being there just a few days. :D

I still can't send emails out, so I can't send Steve his larger files for approval. I thought some of those photos were very flattering and his blue shirt brings out the blue in his eyes. :)

Jennings was quiet yesterday when I made my crappy landing....good thing no one was watching.

I had no idea where the Holiday Inn was located and the FBO was closed, so I just taxied all over the airport looking for it. One reason I couldn't find it is because it is no longer here. They got bought out by Day's Inn.

But, the Stearman tie-down area off the grass strip was nice and had stakes in place. The Cajun food was good going down, but I was sorry I ate it later.

It looks like some stormy and windy weather in the forecast for several days, so I may try to work my way home tomorrow after landing at Kittie Hill (77T) and spending the night with Jason and Morgan. I'm looking forward to checking out that airport and spending time with Jason and Morgan.

Priorities are again shifting and protecting the Citabria from storms is up there at the top.

Diana,
You could get a free gmail account (http://gmail.com) which will allow you send email through a browser. If you set the "reply to:" to your home email address you will get all responses in both accounts.

If you need an invite, I think you can sign up without one, let us know. Many of us have gmail even if it's not our primary email.

Wow! Thanks! I couldn't find GoogleEarth on my computer, so I'll have to wait till I get home from work later on to find it. But, it looks like what you figured out would be really cool!

Dang!

If you go to Google, you can sign in and create your own map. Upload the kmz file that Joe posted and you can see them all on Google Maps. Then,.. you can also open Google Earth on your PC,.. or your iPHONE! and see them all on their too! I have GoogleEarth on my iphone and under the settings, you can import your GoogleMaps to view them. A nice way to take that list/map on the go with you.

Just checked weather on AOPA's Flight Planner. It does look like you are in for some less than stellar flying conditions over the next few days. Good luck and God be with you.

Thank you. :)

Actually, it's decision time. Winds are stronger than forecast at 77T near KGTU. Now gusting to 40 KTS. It's pretty windy here at KBMT.

Diana:

Winds as they are, I think both you and CitaBlueBerria look really fine - on the ground!

That's what I think. Be safe. We don't want anything to happen to you or your airplane.

I know that's how it's supposed to work but something is wrong with my kml/kmz file.

In Google Earth I see all 939 airports covering the country. In Maps though only about 1/4 are displayed, a seemingly random selection.

If somebody smarter than me can figure out what's wrong, I'll fix it. We will NOT discuss how much time I've spent looking for the problem.

:)

Well, it's been interesting. I waited another hour and the winds were less, so I flew to Kittie Hill. What an interesting little grass airport! Lots of character and a few characters too. It's like a step back in time.

Jason (JasonT from the red board) came and picked me up and I stayed with him and Morgan. They took me to a restaurant in Austin (The Oasis) with a beautiful view. I couldn't get on his wifi late last night for some reason.

So, this morning I visited with some more of the airport bums at Kittie Hill, and then flew to Sulphur Springs, TX. Landed on the grass here. I'm sitting in the FBO and after studying the weather for the rest of the flight home, decided to spend the night here. Visibility has not been as good as they were reporting, Mc Alester is down to 1800' and there may be storms back home later today.

Lunch at the Red Barn across the street was good. :)

It seems like nothing in flying goes exactly as planned. It makes the old saying, "Time to spare? Go by air." even more appropriate. At least you are landing on/at grass strips where the people are usually more civilized! :D:smile:

Diana, you're 38 nm SW of me right now! If KLBR is on your flight path, we could have lunch or something. We've got plenty of room if you want to spend the night. Heck in the Citabria, I could find you some grass to land on here at the ranch. You'd just have to buzz the field to scare off the hogs :)!

Joyce

Joyce, I hope someday you guys find a way to put a runway in at the ranch...you'd like it. Don't know if the hogs would like it though. :D

Thanks for the invitation. :) I'd love to come down there and visit you guys sometime.

The weather is looking more unstable the next few days, so I hope to get home before it gets more stormy and we get too much rain at the farm.

We're still hoping you will fly up and see us sometime.

Yep. :D One of the reasons I didn't want to make plans with too many people along the way is that I had no idea if I would be able to get where I was going at any particular time. And I still didn't know which way I was headed when I woke up this morning.

At least you are landing on/at grass strips where the people are usually more civilized! :D:smile:
And some of them even have bathrooms! :D

I'm so anxious to hear about your trip first hand...we may need to have some We B Smokin' time when you get back. :yesnod:

Fly safe, friend. ;)

The weather has been sufficiently bad that I would be reluctant to be anywhere in a fabric covered airplane.....or even in a spam can, for that matter.....
