After about 3 weeks of phoning my website host, they have admitted to a disk crash on a drive that was not being backed up.

It took several calls for them to admit the site was down. Another several calls for them to get my FTP password working again. After even more calls, they agreed that my files were all missing and that the drive needed to be restored. A couple of minutes ago I was told that the restoration is about 85% complete.

This is the second time. Five years ago when their server went down, they were unable to restore anything because it wasn't backed up then either.

Can you suggest a reliable host? I was using JumpLine.com for my Coast Guard Auxiliary website and they were always helpful and reliable, but thought I'd ask if you have a better suggestion. My domain is up for renewal in a month.

I moved FROM BlueHost to HostGator a little less than a year ago. I've been happy with HostGator so far. Reasonable rates, and good service/support/uptime/speed.

BlueHost started giving me (and a lot of people) "exceeded CPU usage" errors when loading images. Considering my site was a simple PHP site with family photos, I wasn't very impressed with them at all.

The company I work for now uses NetworkSolutions. I don't like their user interface at all. Seem to have reasonable speed, but it isn't very 'user friendly' for more technical users/developers.

I've had no problems with HostCentric.com.

A couple years ago the did not charge me for two months due to systme problems during an upgrade.

I run VPS's on both Midphase and Bodhost, with no complaints. I've been on Midphase for about six years (a record), and Bodhost for a little under a year. I can't vouch for Midphase's shared hosting, though, and I don't believe Bodhost offers it.

In fact, if you need space pronto, let me know. I have plenty.

I used to like HostingZoom, but they moved to a new DC about a year and a half ago, and the service degraded terribly. The support staff was still responsive, but most of the problems were upstream, and downtime / slow connections just got unbearable.

Apollo used to be pretty good, but I got annoyed with them after they were down for FOUR DAYS a few years ago due to a fire in another building in the neighborhood. The fire, I understand. The slow recovery, I didn't. The refusal to compensate was unacceptable.

If you do not need a dedicated server or server side scripts/extensions I recommend Google Apps. It's free baby!

Thanks for the heads-up. One of my clients was using BlueHost and they seemed OK. I'll steer clear of them based on your comment.

Looks like HostGator has everything I would need for $5 per month. Not bad at all.

I looked at HostCentric, but their website kind of makes a mystery of their products and services. Looks like they have a more limited set available for $10 per month plus $20 setup although their front page says $6.95.

MidPhase looks like they have everything I really need at a reasonable price. Right now, the Nightly Backups they advertise on their front page looks real good to me, as does the 24/7 Phone Support. I have been on hold this afternoon for over a half-hour today....I'm still listening to my providers selection of music.

BodHost looks like a bit of overkill for me.

Thanks for the offer to share. I don't actually need to get back online immediately. And since all my files are gone, I don't really want to restore a site using FTP from my backups.

If you do not need a dedicated server or server side scripts/extensions I recommend Google Apps. It's free baby!

I really need PHP, database, etc. I have a website on att.net that is relatively cheap and quite restricted, but it has never had a problem.

They just hung up on me....

Like I said, I can't vouch for midPhase's shared hosting because I haven't used it in years. But it was quite good when I did. Also, their VPS/Dedicated Dep't is superb, and quality outfits tend to be quality outfits.

I use Dreamhost, and I've been satisfied.
In your dreams! :)

(We use BlueHost and it's been alright, but nothing to write home about. I REALLY dislike that when you call support they ask for your password over the phone, and they don't seem to be very good at understanding that the person in charge of the technical decisions might not be tho one providing the credit card.)

We've been using Go Daddy for some time now for Joyce's non-profit site. No real problems as yet, and they aren't terribly expensive, either.

I use dot5hosting, and while I read about problems all the time, I've never had a single one (they went down last week, first time in 3 years for me, and they had their backups restored about an hour later).

They're cheap, and reliable, and tech support is available 24 hours a day through online chat. Support ain't in America, but what is anymore?

A second vote for GoDaddy - just switched to them at our company and I have been very impressed

I've run a couple of SIMPLE sites on Yahoo's hosting site. They've worked well for me. Their sitebuilder software isn't the greatest, but it's met my needs.
