I know, they're outdated and the VOR's are going away but does anyone have a thought on what it would cost to install a pair of NAV/COMs in an Arrow? It has no radios now and I can't afford a 430w by the time I pay for installation. My thought is to have someone install a pair of common nav/coms (one with GS) and when they go to heck, buy another set from ebay and just slide them in.

Any suggestions on what brand/model might be the most common and easy to find? My goal is to use this to get a bunch of my IFR training completed and then rent a plane for the check ride.

Are you using a pre-wired kit? or are you building the harness. ??

Whatever is cheapest. I just have no idea what it would cost to have someone put in a couple of cheap NAV/Coms

Call Wenthworth Aircraft salvage ask what they get for a complete package of KX 155 harness and indicators. The probably have a complete set from the same type aircraft that you have.

Just get one SL30 and an indicator.

The SL30 has standby monitoring on both sides, so it works like two of each.

+1 on this. The SL30 is a great radio. Very reliable too.

The rack & tray and antenna for a 430w is relatively inexpensive, can you find someone who would install it as "provisions" and when you can can afford the CDI and Radio slide them in? I get it, its really had to invest that kind of money at once but maybe you can spread it out.

The install kit for a GTN650 is worth abut $1200.

Would you consider a CDI a slide in item? I've never run into any that seem to fit the intent of the "slide into a tray" owner-maintenance rules.

The shop that installs "provisions" is going to have finish out the entire system, as in install the radio, CDI and perform the STC ground/test flights to complete it.

I know some within the FAA discourage the practice but fact is this kind of stuff comes directly from OEMs on new transport category aircraft. All kinds of things are "provisioned", ie wired and mechanical aspects present and LRUs missing like broadband internet or flight data recorder options.

This past year I did a full install of MK12D with GS indicator, KX125 with GS indicator/receiver, Terra 340 audio panel, 4 place intercom, and KT76A, in the Cherokee. Total cost was ~$5k including new circuit breakers, and avionix master.
You have to shop around to get the best bang for your buck on the equipment, and do all the work yourself.

$5k in labor, or $5k inclusive of the radios themselves?
