Anyone know of any ideas to build time. I thought of advertising for regional flights for cost only. I really love flying but don't have the money to do it a lot. Thanks for any feedback.

Throttle back in your flights, they'll take longer. Volunteer as safety pilot to help, people stay IFR current, or for students while they are practicing. Become a jump pilot. Tow gliders and / or banners. Some of these require a CPL.

Whatever you do, enjoy it and fly safe!

Advertising? Collecting money for flying is commercial. Your profile says you are VFR so I assume you are ppl. Great way to loose your ticket.

What I do is pull it back and putter along. I could do 170kts. Most time I do 140 and when I'm really bored 115. Fuel flow is literally cut more than half.

You're all assuming he owns. Throttle doesn't impact a Hobbs and a rental.

OTOH, if he's a private pilot, he should know the basics of 61.113. This isn't a particularly esoteric scenario.

I met people with airplanes, they saw good, trustworthy character in me and they said, "Here, go fly my airplane."

I understand I can't be compensated for flying with out a commercial. They can pay for the cost of flight. I do not own and must rent. Thanks for the feedback.

No they cant. The FAQ is very clear in this. Somebody else paying for you flight time is compensation. Period.

As others have said, no, you are wrong. And as a rated pilot you should be aware of this, which doesn't bode well for any future as a pro.

They can pay there share but not the whole cost.

Yep, if you are the only one in the plane, you pay for all costs. If you have two passengers, you pay a third of the cost.

Not a cheap solution to getting lots of flight time. The Ercoupe I flew burned 5.5 gph. If you can make friends and get cheap rental, that's about as cheap as it gets.

I rented the school plane when I was able to solo and flew my instructor to his home airport (ASD) to pick his C150 up to bring back to NEW for maintenance. Got free instructions on the way there and soloed back. I did log dual there and solo back. Saved the $65 on instructor costs.
Then we did it again to get it home. Did help on cost. I paid for the plane and get a free CFI for awhile.

It is in the regs.
It is part of most private pilot educational materials.
It is typically covered by CFIs.
DPEs frequently ask about it during orals.
It is frequently the subject of threads on here and other pilot sites.
AOPA & EAA in their magazines have extensively covered the tribulations of flight sharing sites such as AirPooler & FlyteNow.

I guess the word just hasn't gotten out yet about this issue. More effort needs to be done.

Just 'cause he's VFR don't mean he ain't got CPL. It just wayy limits his options as CPL.

How many comm VFR pilots do you know? That's like taking your prom date to the motel and just kissing......
Not many, about 4 or 5. But the kind of flying they do kinda requires VFR anyway. Can't be done in IMC, no matter what.

Meeting other pilots and and other mechanics I have found that there are many undecudated people in aviation. You don't have to know regs, understand basic aerodynamics, or have good decision making to get a certificate.

Hopefully those people learn before it's too late once they get their certs.

And at least one serial killer. My heart sank when I learned that the murderer who chained that woman inside a shipping container (and shot her boyfriend in front of her) was a private pilot. Terrible s**t.

If they are paying the cost of the flight, you are being compensated. The error is thinking money has to go into your pocket for there to be compensation. The FAA has counted all sorts of benefits as compensation, some pretty silly. But you providing a service and they paying for you to fly it (by paying for the airplane instead of you) is a pretty clear one.

My CFI made a big point to drill privileges/limitations. So did the DPE. They even made sure that I knew what I *could* receive compensation for to make sure there was no doubt that basically everything is off limits except for under a pretty limited set of circumstances.

Make the hours worthwhile: get another endorsement or rating. Get your complex / HP if you don't have it.
Join a flying club. Meet other pilots.
Volunteer to be safety pilot and log PIC. Do it in a complex and log PIC complex.
Marry a girl who is rich and wants you to fly her around.

Quick question.

Unit74 alluded that advertising would signify compensation. What if a ppl holder put an ad in the classified that said shared flight cost?

Like if I were to advertise trips to Vegas where the passengers pay for their percentage ie 50% if there was only 1.

As has already been said here, don't do this part 91. Even with a Commercial Certificate. It is holding yourself out and is a violation. Look what happened to flytenow.

He'd of course need his complex endorsement for that.

No. Sharing costs under 61.113 requires the pilot to have a reason for going other than transporting a passenger. Sure, saying "I'm going to Vegas next month, wanna go and split the cost" to a friend or acquaintance might be perfectly ok. But advertising for passengers for multiple trips to Vegas is a bit different. Leaving off the legal mumbo jumbo and using the unofficial but very real standard for this stuff, it "quacks" like a commercial operation.

You sure you didn't look at them with that googly-eyed flat stare thing that you do that weirds people out again? ;)

I see the need for an "awareness" campaign complete with 5K run, and free t-shirts in a pastel color!

Isn't that called "Part 135 in Alaska"? :) :) :)

My mechanic has agreements with several airplane owners to fly their planes a few hours a month to keep them in good health. I think it would be proper to let owners know you could fly their airplane so it doesn't get rusty. You would have to get training in each of the types you flew so there would be some up front instruction cost.

Why don't you get your commercial VFR? If I remember right, it's only about 10 hours of flying. Can anyone confirm or correct that number? I know it's money up front but that's better than possibly losing your ticket for getting compensated. Besides, it would open the door to other opportunities.

Edit:
I see you need 250 hours to get the commercial. Since you're looking to build time, I assume you don't have 250 hours. My bad.

I agree. That is what I would do. You don't want to be in that gray area when it comes to the FAA.
