So I pretty much use Enterprise for all my car rental needs. I never have a problem with them dropping off at a smaller Municipal airport for me. I called the local office at my destination today and they said it would be a $50 "drop fee" and that their corporate headquarters have changed their policy. That was more than a 1 day rental! I expressed my concern about the charge and he did waive it but I will be prepared for it from now on.. I could see a $10 or $20 fee but not $50!

I have been using Uber more and more but it was not available where I am going tonight!

Just a heads up for anyone who uses Enterprise..

This is not a new thing.

They once made me a smoking deal on a one-way rental where they waived the one-way charge of $80 and the quote was only for a one-day rental, something to the note of $35.
Then they sent me the bill and I saw the juicy $80 fee tacked on. I was so nice that I dropped the car off at another of their locations too. But they were a**holes and charged extra.
I called the CC company and said to reverse the payment for this scam and they did. The Enterprise a-holes changed their tune quickly after that. I am lucky to have a good CC company. *whew*

I quit using Enterprise when they put me in a Kia Soul 3 times after telling them I hate the car. Their solution was to upgrade from Intermediate... I use Hertz now and I dig their golf program, I don't have to talk to anyone... just find my name on the board and check out when I leave the lot.

Check and see if there is a FBO on field that can arrange the rental car. They sometimes have deals that may waive the drop fee if they coordinate it rather than you having a car delivered.

The other option is to just call and have Enterprise pick you up from the FBO when you arrive and take you to their counter...that should still be free.

I might have to start doing that.. I usually just call the local office

Yeah, I have gold or emerald or whatever status with Hertz and National and super discounts for both.

But there's a catch: there are a good number of airports where Enterprise is the only game in town.

If you reach Executive Elite status with National they will deliver a car to any FBO within 50 miles of one of their locations for no charge (delivery fee, not rental fee).

BTW... Since AOPA seems to have some sort of relationship with Enterprise et al, I wonder if part of their deal could be to waive these charges when the location is an airport.

I hate using Enterprise simply because they don't require the fuel tank to be topped off and they do a crappy job at cleaning vehicles up. In addition to that, they take FOREVER to get the contract stuff signed, walk you out and inspect it, etc. I use National (Emerald Executive) and Hertz (Gold) when I'm flying into the major airports, simply because I can walk out to any car on the lot and drive off in it for no extra charge, sans the special vehicle lot (BMWs, Infiniti, etc). The National/Hertz brands just aren't as convenient as Enterprise because they don't have as many "neighborhood" rental facilities. Just an FYI, National, Enterprise, and Alamo are all owned by the same parent company.

That is why I hate Enterprise as well and am a die hard National fan. They do not fill up vehicles if they are under 1/4 tank...thus leaving you having to fill up right off the lot and/or guess how much fuel you used when you return. Same ownership but much different operations.

I just heard that you can rent cars at a great rate from Costco.

Free, but I've had that take over an hour just to get picked up only to then still have to drive to the Enterprise location and begin the rental process. They then frequently don't have the car ready when you get there..."we are waiting for it to be returned and then we will have to clean it up." I've also had to ride around while they pick up other renters as well.

The price is right, but the time wasters are deal breakers. I now use Enterprise as a last resort for ANY rental car needs.

Enterprise has intentionally overbilled me twice. I suspect given much of their business is insurance loaners and the like, they get away with this systemic fraud. Both times they tacked on extra days that I did not have the car and even when the car was returned to an actual Enterprise agency, not just left with some dude at the FBO.

Enterprise had made a back deal with many of the FBO's to charge a higher rate if you are picked up at the airport vs not picked up at an airport. It was like an extra $20 fee that was worked into the bill.
With an increase to $50, this will push many to go the Uber route or fly to airports where Hertz is located.

Also do not forget the indepent guys, like Guardian car rental, they will pick you up from Ferguson airport (82J) in Pensacola and you can leave it Sunday morning at the airport when they are closed. 1-850-456-0351

I am glad to hear I am not the only one - have reported in the past about: billing for days not received, wrong daily rate, top off when I had topped it 2 miles ago, drop off fees which I had been told were waived, multiple ingenious ways to scam you (I have heard of, and fear, the 'car was damaged in your care' ploy). I think my last rant here was 'Hertz Hurts' and I swore off them but no rental company is above this.
I suspect that this is the same scam that many large companies, not just rentals are pulling now as a means of additional revenue. They probably have a secret term for it but the way it works is, they tack on charges knowing 75% of customers won't notice, don't have the 30minutes required to phone these people each time, don't see the bill because it goes to their accounting department etc.

My last one was the waste disposal company which, after I reported their equipment was rusting out, and without mention of a fee to me, changed the dumpster, sending me a $300 fee plus $9.00 per month thereafter plus another ambiguous fee and taxes.
It took 6 months of calling and writing these people to get them to remove it, and admit they were wrong. (I am nothing, if not persistent) Each of the 6+ people I called told me they would take care of it, have all charges removed yet only the last person did. That in itself is another scam, telling customers they would remove the fees and then don't - or tell customers they would call back (and not call back; all of them did this). I also take names and write down who, date and time, what was said, how it was left which I think helped my case. Thinking of starting to record these calls.
Thank God there is one other competitor in the waste disposal business where I am (there often is no competitor such as with AT&T)

I've posted a few of my Enterprise incidents before so I won't go into too much detail. Suffice it to say that they seem to go out of their way to get more revenue sometimes...

Picked up at big airport with plan to drop off in town a few days later. No problem. Attempted to drop off at dealer in town. They were co-located with a body shop. Agent tried to charge me $800 (or so) for a dime sized scratch on the rear bumper that was already there. Decided not to drop off with them. Went to the next town over and dropped off with no problem. I even pointed out the scratch.

Picked up at one GA field with a plan to drop off at another GA field. I got the beat up one. Agent at the other end put in claim for damage in my name. It was a definite fishing expedition because when I called them on it (after getting the notification in the mail) the claim was immediately dropped.

Picked up car at medium sized airport with a plan to drop it off at local GA airport a few days later. Day before drop off I went to the local office to let them know I would be dropping it off at the local airport at dawn. No problem. They would get it. Turns out they didn't pick it up for a week and figured they would charge my credit card for the extra time. Several phone calls later, the renting agent finally credited my account and claimed she would get the money from the receiving agent.

Yeah, I hate Enterprise!!

Enterprises is, bar none, the scum of the industry.

no,payless is the scum of the industy 100 times worse than enterprise. Never use payless, you will get ripped of with no way to get a refund.

bob

That's a shame. The founder of Enterprise is/was a pilot. Looks like in 2001 he stepped down and his son took over as chairman and CEO, though.

I just rented from Enterprise today and had them drop it off at the local field. No charge.

I'm leaving in the morning on Sunday but they're charging my until Monday morning where they can inspect the car. Any way around this?

With our FBO we notate the date and time the vehicle is back...and that is what enterprise relies upon for charges. May be worth asking if yours can do same?

I've run into that before. Wanted to fly in for my family reunion on Saturday. Enterprise closed at noon and reopened Monday morning. They wanted to charge me two days rental for the four hours or so I wanted the car. I politely declined their services, and asked my uncle to pick me up. Only waited in the Georgia summer heat about 20 minutes for him to arrive . . . But I wasn't gonna pay ~$100 to drive less than ten miles total.

Fyi, enterprise, national and alamo are all owned by the same holding group. As for being ripped off that may be ****ty branch managers or employees. My branch doesn't pull stuff like that. If we know you are dropping it off sunday we wont charge you until monday. However if you're a dick we wont go out of our way to be helpful.
* the last part was not directed at anyone specific. Just making a general statement.

They share ownership and will share cars, but that is where the similarity ends...currently anyways. Management and operations of all three are run VERY differently...thank God.

That's really hit or miss. 'Yeah, I can get you in an hour or two, just have to wait for my colleague from A/B/C to return'. The local enterprise offices are often only staffed by one person.

Some of their agents are clowns. I have dealt with them a decent amount on government travel, and if it is not a local rental, I normally run into some unacknowledged tomfoolery. We have a payment called GAR (IIRC) which is like a $15/day fee for govt rate rental contracts. But if you are paying GAR, you are exempt from taxes by mil contract. You also are required to decline insurance add-on fees, as the govt contract already pays for that. So there are a few items to look out for. Anything other than base rental cost, GAR, and appropriate logistical fees are non-reimbursable. I think that is something the agents don't get. We don't just have a bottomless spending account…….it actually comes out of the service members paycheck who is traveling on official business if they screw it up. Several times, I have been handed a receipt with GAR, taxes, insurance add ons, and fraudulent fuel fees (with the car at a full tank). When I query the person, they act like I am crazy and that I will have to call the 1-800 number. They get a commission off the sale, and so it is in their interest to charge as much as they can, and in the case of Enterprise or Dollar, often those charges are fraudulent and not at all what was depicted on the original contract. They are all shady. Tread with caution and pay attention to the receipt. To be fair, I have yet to call the 1-800 number and not get the issue resolved promptly, but I don't have the spare time in my day to sit on hold for an hour to deal with their incompetence.

My roommate works for Enterprise customer service, I'll ask him about it tomorrow.

This is why I use Uber all the time now when I can

Uber is not without faults, surge pricing can be crazy!! My wife was in Chicago last week and makes the identical trips everyday. The prices were over double on some days!

I would agree with those who say the level of service depends on the branch. We have rented with Enterprise for years in one major city using a number of branches there. Some will deliver to the FBO (actually not even an FBO, but a huge private hangar) and some won't. Sometimes the car doesn't show up when scheduled. Sometimes they forget to pick it up. One time we came back a week later and the car was still sitting where we left it, even though Enterprise had been notified. About six months ago the airport terminal location got a new manager and she has been great.

I'll take uber any day over renting when I can.

Did you want insurance?
did you want no insurance insurance?
are you sure?
we can insure your your opinion about paying for insurance, would you likethat?
do you want us to fill it up?
do you want us to not fill it up?
do you want us to not fill it up then lie to you about it?

NO I WANT MY M@#$%@# RENTAL CAR

I've haven't had these problems but being a corporate customer has it's perks. Hmmm, doesn't AOPA have special rates, i wonder if using their discount code would eliminate this?

You're brave buying a rental car!

In 1991, I bought a 1989 Chevy Celebrity off the Hertz lot. It had 29k miles. I ran it up to 250k miles with no unusual problems, then gave it to my son, who put another 50k on it. Just routine maintenance: tires, batteries, belts & hoses, a couple starters and alternators, brakes.

Enterprise's limited weekend hours are a problem for many general aviation customers.

You beat me to it. I bought a 2004 Toyota Matrix from Hertz in '05, drove it for five years then gave it to my son in Arizona. He still has it; 254K. And like Mason's car, just routine maintenance. Most trouble-free, cost-effective car I've ever had.
