Gotta agree here. PoA looks like a huge bunch of whining pansies compared to lots of other stuff I read. Diesel forums that allow all brands are particularly entertaining.

PoA ranks about second or third lowest on the "easiest to cause butthurt" scale in my list of forums.

Lowest is an electronics forum I no longer read. Everyone there whines non-stop about their perceived butthurt. Can't get three posts into any thread without some attention-seeking cry-baby getting all bent out of shape.

Meanest are automotive forums of specific types.

Up until this year I'd have said "best engine makes up for it" but the tweaks Ford is doing on the 6.7 are looking mighty impressive...

Ford needs to work on that interior though. :)

I belong to a pilot forum which charges a fee and also checks to see that you have a commercial or higher certificate. Keeps some of the posers away but the discussions are easily as heated as here.
 
It makes this place interesting. I also visit aviation forums that are better "behaved" but they are boring and I only go there for actual facts. This place is more entertaining. Sure some people sometimes get carried away but all in all the moderators here seem to handle it pretty well in my opinion without killing all the fun.

I keep considering it but after my experience on the socata forum, I am avoiding plane specific forums for now.

I actually like that idea. Make the fee nominal, 10 or 20 bucks, use the first bit of the revenue to keep the place running, then use the rest to help fund the main dinner and/or beer/or whatever at the official fly-ins.

Solves multiple issues and those who actually attend the fly-ins and become a part of the community are the ones who are rewarded.

And if the membership is cheap, I really don't think it'd get boring. Anyone who doesn't think this place is worth $10/yr isn't truly a member in the first place.

Plus, it'd likely clear a couple thousand superfluous names off the list who haven't been here in years.

I disagree. Keep it free. Even a nominal fee will keep out lots of people who are interesting, and will make good posts.

It will also keep out people who are kinda sorta interested in aviation and are just looking for information. If GA is to survive, we need to reduce barriers to entry any way we can, and that includes getting info about aviation.

Charging a fee turns it into a country club.

That is an interesting idea. People pay a membership fee and as long as they behave, they get it back at the end of the year.

How about this:

The first year is free.

After the first year a nominal fee kicks in. If you don't pay, you lose the right to post, but you can still lurk.

Use the "user fees" to finance the beer and burgers at a couple of regional fly-ins for those that paid and charge a nominal fee for lurkers.

I like that idea too.

Edit: that's similar to EdFred's idea that you must attend an official fly-in within xxx days of signing up or you lose your membership. Another idea I like.

Part of the reason why this forum is so successful is that it is so welcoming. If you start locking it down the membership will plummet like the other places.

An option may be to have a paid section where those more sensitive members can have protected boring conversations with each other. :D

Spouting unrelenting obstinate hogwash can cause a p!ssing match no matter whether the forum is in person or over the internet. That's one reason. There are many others.
 
Hogwash is bad, but what's worse is the trained-dog mentality that I see so often. If some media mouthpiece on either side of a subject has weighed in, you can bet there will be plenty of weak-willed lemmings parroting that diatribe no matter the facts.

It drives me crazy when I see people cut and paste, or just change a pronoun or two and drop some obvious lie in here, repeating it over, and over until it becomes 'the truth'.

Original thinking and research are dead on the internet.

It has nothing to do with being sensitive. It has a lot to do with trying to weed out those who don't make constructive posts but rather just come here to troll. I has a lot to do with the loss of community that this place had six years ago. It has a lot to do with weeding out the people who have no respect for others and have no intention of becoming part of the community.
