I was just listening to WBBM 780 out of Chicago. Well, I had it on in the background would be a better description. I think it was an ad for Crain's Chicago Business magazine, I missed everything until I heard:

"How come nobody ever talks about expanding O'Hare?"
"Well, who cares as long as we have Meigs Field?"

Or something like that. I'll try to keep listening until I hear it again.

Hey, Mayor Dummy, election time is coming...

I wanted Friends of Meigs to run some ads.

The vast majority of Chicago, including the city council and Daley's business supporters were angry when the midnight raid happened. They need a reminder.

Chicago area folks, turn 780 AM on right now! They're supposed to have a story on Meigs in a few minutes! :rollercoaster:

Dang they run a lot of commercials...

As a somewhat newbie to aviation, Can someone give me a little story behind Meigs Field?

OMG

"In a controversial move on March 30, 2003, Mayor Daley ordered private crews to destroy the runway in the middle of the night, bulldozing large Xs into the runway surface. The required notice was not given to the Federal Aviation Administration or the owners of airplanes tied down at the field, and as a result sixteen planes were left stranded at an airport with no operating runway. (They were later allowed to depart from Meigs' 3,000-foot taxiway.)"

I almost fell out of my chair reading the story of Meigs!

Shows how much good it does to prohibit skunks on runways...
Hopefully we can eventually make him wish he hadn't done it.

Well, I fell out of my airplane.

I soloed on March 30, 2003. Never got to go. :( I still remember the feeling from that morning, waking up and getting on the old AOPA board to see the thread "Meigs is gone". :(

Closest I got, 11/25/2005: (Note the control tower, still standing right in the middle)

That mayor is a Criminal!!!

I hope that they do put an airfield back there - but I fear that now its gone the power of corp. development will win out! :(

Just made me sick reading the articles!

For Jay's reading, anyone have that link to the story by the ATC guy that was supposed to work that morning?

He did work that day and the rest of the next few weeks. He saved a guy's life by telling him to dive to avoid another plane. Not no more.

I was flying Young Eagles from Meigs one Saturday when there was a Bears exhibition game at Soldier Field. Just to show you how well Daley's city treated the airport. The cops closed the road going to Meigs and the museum campus area behind Soldier Field. Mark shows up to work the Meigs tower. The cop told him he couldn't drive down that road. He told them he was the controller. He showed his FAA ID. Eventually he was told if he kept talking he was going to be under arrest.

I fell outta mine too. I used to fly up there almost weekly with commercial students - it was exactly a 2 hour flight from OTM so we'd do the 2 hour day dual XC, spend the day in Chi-Town, and come home the 2 hours in the dark. I'd even let 'em take a friend along. I've got some great pictures too, but none scanned on this computer. One of the fondest memories was in December, colder than a mother-in-law's smile, dark, tower closing in 15 minutes (our cabby got lost and couldn't find the airport) airplane parked half a mile from Signature and we gotta dump a quart of oil in and of course, no funnel. I found out old sectionals work pretty darned good in a pinch.

Ahhh, the good old days.

I did a low pass over Meigs in a Beech Sundowner in my first ever flight. I don't even have it logged, but I sure remember it! By the time I started training in 2003, it was (sad) history. Unfortunately, by then I'd moved out of Chicago, so I couldn't (legally) vote against Daley multiple times each election! Remember the Chicago motto: Vote Early, Vote Often! AGAINST DALEY!
