Well I must have accumulated some bad karma somewhere. While Attempting to change out the leaky main seal on my '82 R65 I managed to push the crank out of place. Well you may ask why this is so bad? There is a thrust washer on the inside of the case that falls off of its retaining pins if the crank moves backwards. Now I get to do a COMPLETE top and bottom end on the engine .

I figure it will be a nice educational experience, but I was hoping to be on the road a bit sooner.....

Oh Well At Least I will know that the engine will be up to spec after I am done with this ordeal.

Pete

P.S. I think I will try to document the teardown on the web

Hate it when things like that happen. Well, I better get back to the garage to continue the weekly session of piecing my car back together so it can run another week....damn GM.

If you read the original book, you'll recognize this phrase:

"...it's all got to come APART again!" Where he's talking about gumption.

I take that book and read it at OSH every year - something about sitting in a tent surrounded by airplanes and quiet makes it a soul-refreshing experience.

I used to work in a dealership (VW, Chrysler, and Jeep) for ten years. I've never had to work all day for nothing on a mistake but I have had to work and afternoon or a morning because of a things not going as planned. It is a tough way to learn but very effective:). I don't know the engine that you are working on but I would think that you could take the oil pan off and reinstall the thrust washer. Again I don't know your engine and you know what is best and being a old engine you might want to build it up with new bearings. I've used up much of my good karma putting things back together without new bearings...seals are another story. I remember the old Ford Escort transmissions that you couldn't remove both driveshafts without putting in a dowel to keep the spyder gears in place. Many poor souls got stuck R&R a transmission for nothing.

Scott, The R65 is a BMW motorcycle.

How do you get an extra 50 hp out of your Harley?

Trade it in for a Suzuki.

Sorry, had to post that. Good luck with the repair. Can't be easy getting parts for a 26 year old motorcycle.

That is the great thing about BMWs. I can go to the local beemer dealer, ans still get just about any part for the old girl (for a price of course).

Although I am envious of my buddy though, he is planning to buy one of the new BMW F800-STs. Those little bikes look like a blast.
