Can you say "unintended consequences?"

Cold hard cash. It's good everywhere you go, right? You can use it to pay for anything.

But that's not the case here in Louisiana now. It's a law that was passed during this year's busy legislative session.

House bill 195 basically says those who buy and sell second hand goods cannot use cash to make those transactions, and it flew so far under the radar most businesses don't even know about it.
...
Hardy says the bill is targeted at criminals who steal anything from copper to televisions, and sell them for a quick buck. Having a paper trail will make it easier for law enforcement.

The way to get thieves stealing cooper is to go after the yards that buy the copper, not every other business. Sheesh.

What happened to, "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private."

what? the lawyers in the legislature didn't think through a law?

Of course, use of cash is purely voluntary...

Houston, we have a problem:

From Article I, Section 10:

No State shall...make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts

Call me captain obvious, but I don't think that law is going to last very long,

With Herman Cain saying the poor can avoid his 9% sales tax on new stuff by buying used...This heads off that little loophole, sorta.

I thought all of Louisiana's cash was in William Jefferson's freezer? :D:rofl:

My guess is that they were just trying to show sympathy towards the Texas residents who passed through the town of Tenaha on the way to Louisiana casinos.

:)
