Yet another hazard in\near the DC SFRA

If they tether it somewhere downtown, it shouldn't be a problem :D .

There are other aerostats around the country. The company that makes them is in Sioux Falls, approach will vector you around the thing if you come in from the north.

Yup. There are a bunch of them along our southern border.

This one always ticked me off as an example of poor thinking.

Hundreds of miles of desolation, and they put it right alongside the lone road in low terrain that would serve as good backup VFR navigation en route to Marfa. With the restricted area crossing the road and railroad tracks. :mad2:

I love the part about how they are going to be tested at an undisclosed location....

Bad guys never read NOTAMS I guess...

Yeah it will be like the "Don't fly near nuke plant" NOTAM that didn't give any deterministic locations. My favorite was the info on Salem 1 and Salem 2 that they listed both in Delaware with different coordinates. The fact is that both are right next to each other in NEW JERSEY.

Which company makes them in Souix Falls? One of the big manufactures, TCOM, builds a lot of them in Elizabeth City, NC

Who needs radar? Just put a bunch of them up around the white house, pentagon, and capitol building--WWII "barrage balloon" style--and get rid of the SFRA.

If they put it in the middle of the FRZ, it wouldn't change things for me in the least -- I can't go there anyway.

Raven Aerostar. Their plant is downtown, their test farm is where you will see the tethered blimp on occasion.

They make the smaller ones that can be deployed on a trailer.

They also make inflatable decoys, tanks, missile launchers etc. :D

Oh, those are all small aerostats. TCOM builds aerostats as big as roughly 700,000 cubic feet.
