Wyoming mountains get another one

Re: Wyoming mountians get another one

Just a few miles from the last crash.....

These guys missed clearing the top of the 11,500' mountain by about 4 feet...... On a VFR flight too........... RIP......

The trick is to give it plenty of altitude clearance (1000' personal minimum, more is better) and approach the ridge at a 45-degree angle so that you only have to execute a 90-degree turn (instead of 180) if things go bad and you need to get back to lower terrain quickly. The downdraft on the leeward side can be surprisingly strong, I've seen 2500fpm down on the back side of the ridges just southeast of ABQ in a 40-knot west wind, not many singles can climb out of that (or twins, for that matter).

Problem is that sometime (often?) those downdrafts are a component of a rotor (especially around Santa Fe) and you are doing all that you can just to keep the wheels pointed towards the ground, never mind frivolous things like TURNING. With those winds, I like something closer to 4000' AGL (but an absolute min above 1500)

This photo is from yesterday, downwind of the pass in the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces, NM. This is the base of a lenticular cloud. The surface wind was gusting to 40 at the time.

That's why I never flew in the Colorado Rockies when winds were above 15 knots. Just wouldn't go.

Very sad. Lots of aluminum in the Rockies.

You westerners can have your damn rocks. Flatland might not be as pretty, but it doesn't come up to get you either.

Re: Wyoming mountians get another one

SFC winds have been very strong the past several days. It's not like it's a secret.... In mountainous terrain, "...all available information..." can mean life or death.

Wasn't there also a commercial flight that went off the end of the runway a couple days ago??

I was channel surfing past Fox and Megan Kelly was on so I had to oggle for a second, and she mentioned something about a (IIRC) American Airlines flight, overshooting the runway.

Yup. I was plowing snow at the FBO and watched it go by and off into the sage brush. It was going 45 -50 mph as it left the runway...:hairraise::hairraise:
Thank god we had a foot of fresh snow that morning to slow it down or it would have "left the building"...:dunno::dunno::eek:

There is more details that should come out soon on the whole fiasco that will have you shaking your head in disbelief. :rolleyes2:

Ben.

Ps. What I thought was really funny was the next morning on one of the cable news shows a American Airlines spokesperson stated the plane came to a rest on a paved portion of the airport............ Yeah right, after they hauled it out of the weeds and towed it back to the ramp. And, it is still sitting there as I type this too. Not bad for a plane the was "not damaged" at all. :cheerswine: :wink2::wink2:. These one line 'press releases' are next to impossible to ever believe.
