Civil Air Patrol taking credit for sinking it yet?

No. It was sunk by a Navy escort ship with depth charges just after U-166's final kill, a cargo ship very near where the sub now lays. The hunter became the hunted. The whole German crew is still on board.

No damn little yellow airplanes were involved.

Lots of ships and one or two U-Boats sunk near the NC coast. You can fish on the wrecks. People living on the outer banks would hear the explosions at night and go out the next day to recover bodies/survivors.
