Out of curiosity Ben, why the desire to go with a Garmin Portable over an iPad with an ADS-B receiver?

If you can wait until end of the month, our club will have a 496 for sale.

Oops my bad a typo lol! Yeah I meant WTB and not wtf. Got a good chuckle out of that. Well I have an ipad with GPS but want the garmin as backup.

I'd also say that a GPS 3 is a pretty good spare you can likely pickup very cheaply.
