Is the "CFI recommendation" for the written still valid on a second hand
course? If so I'm also in the market for this (150G gets first dibs) for my daughter.

I don't think so, but, most CFI's will sign you off if you prove to them you've studied. You could print out your scores to the Kings test exams and they would probably sign your log book.
