About to be planeless and the summer is finally here, looks like my Cherokee is gone. Was supposed to close the deal on the Bonanza this weekend but the mechanic has come back with bad news and I don't think the seller is going to want to fix it, at least not fix it how'd I'd want and I'd want my shop to do it anyway. So, it looks like I'll be getting my deposit returned. I'm looking for something like a Comanche, Bonanza or a 182. Prefer it having a 430W in it or better or be priced at a point I can put one in, mid time engine. I'm in the $50ish range if anyone knows of something that's not out in the typical places, I'd love to hear about it. Yes, I'm thinking about sending EdFred an email.

FWIW, Bart, I have flown in Ed's plane, and it is a good 'un.

And EdFred did good buying that bird, I agree with Spike, it's a nice ride. And it's a 737 to boot.

EdFred contacted, if you guys are lyin' to me. I'll whine all over this board. I fell in love with that Bonanza. It was showroom quality clean. Paint looked like it was applied yesterday, started right up, interior was fresh leather. Only issue I had was the auto-pilot was a Century 1 and the panel was very retro. But at the price I had a little scratch left over to try to spruce the panel up. 400hrs on a factory reman. A&P got into it day before yesterday, compressions 40/40/50/50/50/50 Needs at least a top overhaul and I'd want my shop to do it cause who knows what else lurks inside.

It may be a buyers market but sellers are selling C-R-A-P.

And folks please, fly your !@#$ airplane or let someone else fly it, give it to me or something sheeshessh. Do you know how many previously perfectly good planes have just been sittin' on the ramp for 2,3,4,5,6,10 years?

T-A-P can be assessed with out a subscription. you just can't post a listing.

Did He use a master oriface and follow Continental's Service bulletin?

those are very typical of any old differential compression tester on a big bore continental.
unless the is a big exhaust valve leak It's not a big thing.

Did he do the compression check cold?

Not sure how he did it, he called me at work. Said it wasn't the exhaust valves.

Then I'd not let that stop me from buying the Bo. the big bore Cont. will run many many hours at 50/80 on the old type of compression checkers, I'd be more concerned with oil consumption, size of the cylinder bore, and the looseness of the valve guides than anything else.

Study up on "Dynamic compression" know how it effects these engines and you'll know why Continental went to the master orifice method of declaring airworthiness of their engines.

Something out of the ordinary is a '59 Comanche PA24/250. It is up on a government auction site at 'municibid.com'. Current bid is around $19,000. Do not know a thing about it, other than what I have read. It is relatively low time, pictures show it to be in reasonable condition, and I believe it was flown from Las Vegas to Colorado a couple of years ago. Not much time left on the auction. I'v seen similar Comanches with an asking price in the $30,000 range. If nothing else, it will be interesting to watch the bidding and see what it goes for when the bell rings. :dunno:

I don't know if my A&P is just gun shy because he has 2 IO-470s with corroded cylinders from sitting around that he's doing a top over haul on because the owner has been saying "Fill 'er up and check the fuel" This plane sat for a short while after the owner died, I'm attributing the low compressions to that.

you'd better stick a scope in them to see.

How long is a short while?
 
The owner passed away. Hangar partner and friends report flying it "some" after his passing. Last annual 2010.

a year ago, I went thru a 182 pre purchase inspection on a 182 that had not been flown/started for 5 years, it had been hangar stored for all that time, it had no corrosion in the cylinders, the engine started and has run well since.

So who knows? it is a crap shoot. I'd go check it out and see if the aircraft is worth the cost of an annual.

I prefer to find a really nice aircraft and then build an engine I can trust over the long haul, Specially in a higher performance aircraft that will be in the clouds with my family aboard.

Bart, I've flow Ed's Comanche and it is fantastic, Smooth fast and roomy. He has done a good amount of work to it including the tip tanks which are sweet.

I know this plane well. I also reviewed the log books. I don't think that at 19K the reserve has been met. The condition of paint and interior is fair and while it has not flown in over a year and the battery is dead they have recently received all log books and the engine is around 600-700 hours.
 
Ed's selling his Comanche! Say it ain't so! Is he buying one of those nasty twins?

Dah. Were I interested in that type (and actually had the money to buy the airplane) that's the one I'd be buying. That said, had I the money to buy an airplane, I'd have bought a Mooney off Ebay last week (fresh paint, Aspen, KLN94, all the sped mods, power flow exhaust, for the money I hasn't seen nicer, at least on paper).
 
I keep looking at Mooneys, But I'm not so sure the gear and the short field ops are what I want for the grass strips in MT. I keep looking at Bonanza's, Comanche's and every now and then gaze at a Cezzna 182 offerings, I just don't like high wing retract mechanism and I suppose I could live with a fixed gear 182. anything else in that genre I should consider?

The only modern airplane I can think of for the job is the Skylane, since it has the gear for the strips and the oomph to get out. Plenty of antiques that will do the job, but whether any of them can fill seats and tanks the way a 182 can I doubt. No expert I, but I have looked at my fair share of airplane porn.

That's the problem, We want to do 1000NM or better trips a few times a year AND we want to land at Schafer, Moose Creek, etc.. . I've seen Bonanza's do both and I think a majority of our flight time will be going from A->B as fast as possible with an ocassional stop in a grass strip here and there, a Bo seemed to fit that bill. I'm thinking 95% of my landings will be on asphault, but I'd like to visit the high altitude turf from time to time.
 
I'd be worried about the prop clearance on a Bo. Doesn't seem like a lot of room. And the stuff in wheel wells, etc. But heck, you live there. If there are lots of guys flying into these strips in Bo's, well, what do I know?

More specifically, Ed Frederick a.k.a. EdFred, is selling a nice Comanche, which is a retractable go fast airplane. He flies that thing into and out of a turf strip all the time. Like I said, what do I know?

You need to read Continental's SB re: HOW-TO test compression.

Many A&P's take shortcuts that result in the numbers you are reporting. Don't ask
your A&P if he followed the factory bulletin, ask him to describe precisely how he
did the test.

Not my A&P a 3rd party one. My A&P is too busy to deal with me during fire season. It's not the only plane on the market, Not going to bend over backwards trying to convince myself to buy it or argue with A&Ps about how to do their job, all interested parties seem to agree that the engine needs a TOP overhaul. It's not up to me to prove them all wrong and shove my money in their hand.
 
I think either the Bonanza or the Comanche would work, but it seems your heart is set on a Bo, and you know what that means.
 
You should be looking at Bellanca Super vikings. Best bang for the buck and way cool compared to these other planes. They fly really sporty also.

:hairraise: aren't those like, tube and rag bonanza's with wood wings or something?
 
Yes they are tube and fabric with wood wings. Built super strong and rugged like my Pitts. Everyone has a spam can, think outside the box. The Viking and super Viking are awesome and fly 10 times nicer than those other planes. If you do some research you will read they fly more like a old fighter rather than a Cessna. You can find really good deals on these planes and they are fast. If I was looking for a fast retract I wouldn't look at anything else. Go fly one. You will be in love. The wood and fabric is the cool part. I would do some serious research if I were you. Talk to people Who had or flew them. Rocket aviation/miller flying service knows them inside and out. The spam can guys will talk bad about them because they know nothing about fabric planes. My personal other choice would be a maule. Tailwheel is way cool.
