Perhaps Gustave Whitehead was responsible?

I can actually see that facility from where I am typing this. KC has a couple of those places - former limestone mines that have been converted to underground storage and office spaces. One of the larger ones actually puts on a 5K/10K run every February. The "Groundhog Run". I did it once and hated it, but that's another story.

These places look like the final scene in the "Indiana Jones" movie.
