listening to JFK Tower, they are landing on 4. wind is 020 at 14G41
 
is the wind as reported by tower True or Magnetic. My memory seems to recall that the direction reported over an AWOS or ASOS is magnetic while a METAR is True.

My slide rule says that a 41 knot wind at 20 degrees is about 14 knot xwind component.

Woops, I thought you were listening to the feed and were quoting the METAR winds. If the tower reported winds 020 at 14G41, then you're correct with the 14 knot cross-wind component and I misinterpreted your post.

I think you misheard. It certainly wasn't blowing that hard when I went past at 400 AGL just before noon today, and the METAR's show:
