Naverus (a US company in Kent, WA) just finished certification of the world's longest RNP RNAV approach--to a new airport (ZUNZ) high in the Tibet mountains.

The new Linzhi airport is at an elevation of 9,670 feet, and due to the surrounding mountainous terrain, could not be served by ground-based nav aids. Therefore, the Chinese government commissioned the development of an RNP approach, and the one that was developed has a winding approach path 95 miles long, with 108 waypoints. Watch this video of the first jet approach into the airport just this month:

Nice video, that's what IFR instruments are for...
No proceedure turn & hardest approach in the world?

thats pretty awesome, just follow the valley.

I could see where it might have the most navigator/pilot TASKS of all the world's IFR approaches, with all the step downs & minor heading changes.

Very intersting Troy. I'd like to post this on another board with your permission.

Best,

Dave

That is cool!
I don't understand why it had to be so long (95miles)?
The valley walls are too high for lower service ceiling a/c to enter, except from that far away?
"Cleared for the approach" could tie up airspace for an hour or more!

Nice video. Some stupid BS political crap included, of course. (If you understand Chinese, you get more of the "flavor.")

But every speech in China dedicating something is filled with that stuff especially considering the location this approach is in. I was in the People's Paradise last month meeting with a government minister and heard it in person. :vomit:

I have unilaterally pulled the charts for now.
More info to follow.
If you have them on your harddrive please hold tight with them - I ask that you do not forward them any where else for the moment.
Thanks!
