The 2023 World Chess Championship has its first game coming up on tomorrow.

Enthusiasm seems a bit muted, since Magnus Carlsen relinquished his throne. Still, to be crowned the World Chess Champion requires two things: 1) Being really, really good at chess and demonstrating it via a Candidate’s Match against the best players in the world, and, 2) Showing up. On that basis, I think the winner will be the rightful World Champion, with no asterisk required.
Regardless, I’m just hoping for exciting games, which have been fairly rare in recent World Championships. And may the best player win!
