how I hate you.

I am changing the link structure in the dashboard so that there are no question marks and numbers.

My guess is because the site had a different structure before, it takes time to publish?

I can't seem to find the code since wordpress uses an interface.

So now all the pages (navigation) at the top are broken links.

http://www.IFLYLIKEAGIRL.COM

links to:

(homepage is posts)

MY STORY

PHOTOS

VIDEOS

LINKS

all of which are "down" now that they have been changed from:

/?=p1 or something to

/photos

/links

etc.

Argh.

If I remember right, you can do this using the .htaccess file. I forget the code... but try Google. If that doesn't work there has to be an app for Word Press!

The question marks and numbers are part of the page URLs.

What exactly are you trying to do, and why? That might be a more helpful starting point.

I read that it might be easier to find a page or post if the permalinks use the names instead of characters and numbers. So I switched to this. The reason is long ago I had a post about switching CFI's (or not switching) on Student Pilot. It took way too long to find, though their engine said it went back forever.

So let's say each of my flight lessons in my log book becomes a "post" with a picture, video, story, map, drawing, whatever and one day in the future I want to pull up my first solo.

It would be easier if it was /solo

instead of /?=page332

or whatever.

So I renamed the links.

Now, none of them work. I am wondering if there is a delay. I should have set things up correctly from the beginning.

Also, since I did this all at home last night but now I'm at work that could I guess be an issue but I doubt it.

If you are using a local install you must make sure that the Apache Rewrite module is enabled. Sometimes its installed locally with that module commented out in the Apache httpd.conf file
The line in my file is
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
If there is a hash mark # at the front of that line, remove it and save the file. Or you can change it through your LAMP software's control panel.

Wow, so much for me remembering anything about web stuff.

The above was what I found using Google. So yeah I guess when I set everything up on one computer (home) then tried to change it on another (work) that might have caused the issue.

Did you rename the links through this page in the Dashboard?

Your post had a broken link and all the plugins I'm trying to install have broken links through word press.

And last night I stayed up until 3am fiddling and the "preview page" didn't match the ACTUAL page and only the "my story" had cut off words at the top called "recent comments"

Now I remember why I am not in IT - it drives me mad when stuff doesn't work. Argh.

I put everything back to the way it was, I'll play with this later. I still need to figure it out though. I won't be home until 10pm or 11pm tonight since I have the Private Pilot Ground School night class far away once per week.

This is going to be a long road.

Now that my links page works again, I see when a user clicks one of the aviation links it navigates away from the page. I'd rather it open a new tab in the browser or a new browser window..... just another thing to figure out!

I should take a class or online tutorial. Jumping in head first only leads to frustration.

Oops, can you see it now?

Ah. Okay.

I haven't used WP for quite a while, but somewhere in there should be a switch to use search-engine friendly URLs. I'm pretty sure that will accomplish what you want to do.

Yes, and that is what started this whole mess. So I undid that, for now.

In addition to that one page driving me crazy (with the cut off words), I also don't like the strange view on my mobile device - you have to click a tiny square to see the pages.

My current view hides categories but that is OK and I'm trying to control other things that seem out of my control too.

I've only played with two or three themes, so getting a new theme is probably what I want.

As I recall from the other thread you're running on Rusty's Unix box.

He'll need to make sure the .htaccess file is writeable by the webserver, or else update it manually with the Wordpress redirection code. He'll also need to make sure .htaccess overriding is allowed.

I run into this problem all the time, but it's because I have to support Wordpress installs on Windows servers and emulate mod_rewrite. It's a bit of a pain, but I've done it so much that I've got it down pretty well. On UNIX it's a breeze.

I guess that brings up a good question, since he is hosting it:

1. What (besides permalinks) will require him to do something? That was never my intention and I don't want to be a pain in the butt.

2. Go Daddy called this morning and I said I had to get ready for work and would call them if I needed anything, I told them I'd found someone to host the site. Then they asked if I'd found DNS something. I had to go, thanked them, and hung up. What do I need to do regarding DNS?

I'll take a look at it when I get home. You setup your Dns correctly with godaddy.

I clicked on your link and it looks correct...

Edit: At least the homepage does. You're right, the tabs don't work.

Hmmm. Kimberly, I went to your site and was redirected to some blimp site.:hairraise:...

Jus kiddin.. site looks good and the tabs worked for me.

I know, that is because I put them back to the old way.

I guess I can't have them the new way until something is done (something technical, see above).

To install a theme or plugin automatically the themes directory and the plugins directory need to be writable by the web server as well. I don't know how he'll feel about that, some webmasters will make the whole wp-content folder writable, some won't make any of it writable for security reasons and just do all those kinds of installs manually. I imagine he'll give us his opinion next time he checks this thread. :wink2:

He'll likely need to be involved in upgrading the version of wordpress installed. Again, it can do it automatically, but only if it's entire directory is writable by the webserver which is questionable at best.

I tried out 3 themes last night so that was not an issue though I did notice a few TINY glitches which I guess could be related to web server permissions but I doubt it.

Do you have modrewrite enabled? I'm pretty sure that's a requirement.

If you're running Ubuntu, you can try the following:

apache2ctl -M

In the terminal. Look for rewrite_module (shared).

yup. AllowOverried All was set but later on it got flipped off to AllowOverride None

Anyway, it's fixed Kim. Enjoy. Oh and if you want the site to view nice on iPhones and what not, look into a "Responsive" theme... just search for them at the theme place.

All I had time for tonight. Keep it simple, stupid, I guess.

This is what it looks like on MY COMPUTER anyway. several have said iPads and iPhones and even PCs do funny things to the site.
