It turned in to one. I got me a couple bottles of a very nice Napa Valley Old Vine Zinfandel, which I managed to score at a bargain price. I mean I'm not an actual wine snob but Carlos Rossi just don't do it for me most days anymore. So, I uncork it, pour a glass and drink it. Tastes like..... some upscale Zinfandel, but a little tart. Pretty much what I expected. Not the smoothest, but pretty good for the price.

Then I ate a small bag of Fritos (hey, I had the munchies and it was the first thing that came in view.) Took a swig of wine. Tasted like.... table grape juice. Hmmm, I thought, that's odd, let's try something else. There was a small bag of Cheetos in reach (that's the cheese that goes crunch, for those unfamiliar.) Ate that. Took a swig of wine. Tasted like.... an oaky Cabernet that had just started to turn to vinegar.

I'm on to something I think. More combinations, and results....

Food:......................... Wine taste:

Doritos Ranch.............. Similar to that of Cheetos
Beef Jerky Stick........... Apple grape juice mix
Uncooked hotdog......... Thunderbird, 1979
" " w/ mustard............. Taylor Cellars Concord Grape
Leftover chili................ Beer and vinegar
Cold anchovy pizza........ Anchovies and vinegar
Tuna salad....................Tuna and vinegar
(Had to open the second bottle)
Leftover Whopper..........Red wine and mayo
Almonds.......................Back to red Zinfandel
String cheese stick........Red grape juice
Pizza slice w/mustard......Anchovies, mustard and vinegar
Stale Sun Chips..............Starting to lose actual taste
Slice of Swiss................ " "
Slice of Cheddar............. " "
Cashew nuts.................." "
(out of wine. Food too, for that matter.)

By the way, my stomach feels really, really, gnarly today.

I do not see any use of ketchup, therefore this can't be a real PoA test. ;)

That is kind of the idea behind wine pairings. You know, the sommelier matches up a certain wine for a particular course. They actually pay people to do that. I one time had a sommelier pair a wine with buttered popcorn. I wish that I could remember what he paired with it. My wife remembers, but she isn't here right now. Anyway, keep up the good work. You are on your way.

How much do you weigh?

:D

Not sure how to answer that:

Doctor: "About ten pounds over my ideal weight."
Officer: "580 lbs."
FSDO: "I'm within weight and balance limits."
Referee: "I'm within five pounds of middleweight class!"
POA: "I'm offended!"

Shiraz and Norwegian holey cheese (like Swiss but I forget the name already) is pretty good.

Jarlsberg, just remembered.

I need to get serious is right. The food changes the taste of the wine.
I'm a big fan of Bogle Old Vine Zin. Not expensive and I think really good.

I'm a big fan of Bogle OZV too, certainly good for the price, despite the fact it's a Central Valley wine (Clarksburg, just South of Sacramento). There are some surprisingly good Zinfandels coming out of Amador County though. Renwood has a couple that are totally kick ass. My favorite though, without getting in to super expensive wines, is Coppola (yes, of Francis Ford association.)

I might have to question the scientific validity of your findings after this point. :D

After the first bottle, it's all academic at that point. Meaning like when you were in college.

No wonder with all that crap you were eating. Maybe try salad with the wine once in a while?

You know, NORMALLY I do actually eat somewhat healthy, I just wasn't in cooking mode, I was doing garage projects. (Some of which I'll have to re-do this weekend, by the way.)

Good point, technically the second bottle should have been Mad Dog or Thunderbird. I think I will impliment that as a cost savings measure next time.

Sac,

Just yankin your chain. Really enjoyed the "experiment". Keep it up! :)

I think I'm going to try it tonight with something healthy like chicken wings, ribs, or pizza. :D

Yeah I know that of course. I tend to pair everything up with red wine, simply because I don't like white wine - too acidic. The one exception is a good Fume Blanc. Grgch Hills has an awesome Fume Blanc that I'll hella chug, er sip, on a hot day.

Someone mentioned Shiraz. I'm not a huge fan of straight Shiraz or sparkling wines, but some Aussie wineries do a sparkling Shiraz, a cold bottle of which is also hella chugable (er sippable) on a hot day.

I don't mind shiraz mixed with cab or some other dry reds. The Aussies do that a lot. I think they'd mix shiraz with 100LL if they could.

Just had a really nice 2008 Kenwood Sonoma Cab last weekend. More experimenting needed on that one I think. :wink2:

Thanks!

"Wine, not just a snob's drink anymore."

Although this is a wine thread, I like Jameson, and also good peaty single malt scotches like Lagavulen. It's scotch or Irish whiskey if I'm not drinking wine.

Had Jameson for the first time a couple of nights ago. Had to have another to be sure the second one tasted as good as the first. :D It's possible there were more before the night was done... :yikes:

Honest to God, I never thought I'd see the phrase "hella chugable" in a discourse regarding wine. Well done!

OMG. Hella? I admit that as a California person it does slip out every once in a while. But hella chugable? Hilarious. I tried some hella chugable beer last night from Sierra Nevada - Chico Wheat or something.

I thought POA was "I'm a blimp"... :D

My preffered drink is eminently quaffable.
I HAVE to fit that into a sentence somehow. I'm flying with a Briton right now - I think that would be a fantastic phrase on the radio with his accent.

Or something? Must have been good if you can't remember.

Blimp = lighter than air.
Nice save, Bill!

Kind of a dive bar, but tonight I went to the "Chug Pub" near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA on tap. Yum.

2:00 a.m., drunk posting, surprisingly coherent. Dr. Bruce would have your medical for being so rational in a drunken condition!

I would have a difficult time being sober in a bar after 9:00 p.m. amongst all the drunks, but to each their own.

(Actually, have a difficult time being sober in a bar, or after 5:00 p.m.)

But I do happen to have bottles of Sterling Zinfandel and Heitz Cellars Cabernet at the ready for later day experimentation. I don't drink a lot of cabs, but the Heitz isn't too oaky so I'll probably hit it first, being the better of the two. The last Heitz I had was like totally hella good.

^^^^^

I've had some really nice Cabs from Sterling. I like many of their dryer wines.

Its interesting not drinking when every one else is getting hammered. I've done it several times. It is a real eye opener.

My wife gave me a kit to make a batch of Merlot for Christmas. So I made it, and bottled thirty-two bottles of Merlot. Then in April we got a kit and made thirty bottles of Chardonnay. Both are supposed to be ready to drink in mid October. We are going to fly out to California and do a bicycling tour of Napa Valley wineries for our anniversary, visit a cousin in San Jose, then come home and have a party to celebrate our anniversary, where we are going to pop open some of our wine that we made. Should be fun. We will probably bring home some wine from Napa Valley, just in case.

For a one time bicycle tour, I would personally concentrate on the Silverado Trail wineries. Silverado Trail parallels the 29, and is a much nicer ride. Either way, most def plan on a stop at V Sattui (on the 29 near St. Helena) for a lunchtime picnic.

I guess I understand this, but I wasn't "amongst all the drunks". I was on a date, at a small bar table, tucked away in a corner. When I'm on a date my focus is on that one other person and not all the other people in the bar. I'm just not "nosy" and don't really look at what everyone else is doing / drinking.
