Windows Media Server

I am going to set up some sort of server at home.....I already know the basic stuff I'm going to set up for most of the server based stuff....but I'm curious:

My XBox360 can connect to a "Windows Media Server" to display content. What the hell is a Windows Media Server, and is there something equivalent that I can install on a Linux server that will do the same thing, and even interface with my XBox?

Zune will run as a Windows Media Server for Xbox I believe.

Haven't used it myself (don't even have an XBox), but will second the recommendation based on a thumbs-up from a couple people whose opinions I trust about these things.

If you have a Windows Vista Home Premium or Ultimate it comes with the media serving capability. I can share photos and music with my PS3 that way.
