My daughter and I built a computer about 5 years ago and we used one hard drive and installed both Linux Mint and Windows 7 operating systems on it. We have had it set up so on boot up, we can select either OS, and then that OS boot takes place. (Neither of us is tech saavy, but we used the Internet to guide the build and set up the OS.)

5 years of flawless operation. There is now something wrong with the Win7 boot up as it goes through and says its updating Windows and then reboots, same cycle over and over. It's been so long since I messed command prompts that I need to learn it all again, but my question is this: can I access the Windows files while in Linux? All I really care about is accessing some of my docs in the Windows partition.

I'd be happy to fix the Win reboot cycle, but what I'm finding is that I need the original install discs. Is that correct? Have not tried yet, mainly because they are buried with the boxes that all the component parts came in and I need to find those boxes. Is that the only way?

I had that happen...endless cycle of updates and reboots. Trying to remember what I did to fix it. Pretty sure it involved reinstalling. Check your CMOS battery/BIOS clock settings. I recall that being involved maybe?

Sorry can't help with the Linux though.

Thank you both. Safe mode did the trick. Windows diagnosed that it was an update failure that caused it, and it reverted to pre-update conditions.
