Why have we not switched to an oval pattern?

I was taught that once you put flaps down, you leave them down. However, our preferred DPE has told us he has no problem with applicants moving flaps back up when warranted. So far, in my own landings, I have not ever felt the need. But I am more open-minded about it now.
