...list airplanes for sale without listing a price?

Never understood that. I have no interest in calling you to find out if you're asking crazy money for your plane or not. List the damn price. Then, if it seems reasonable, I may contact you.

Maybe they're lonely and want to chat with people? Trying to collect phone numbers and email addresses?

Dont want their business-partners or ex-wives to see with a google search how much cash they just received.

Irritates me
That and crap photos
Or engine time N/A

time wasters.

I don't buy anything without a listed price. Right now we are house hunting in our new state, and don't inquire about any homes listed by realtors without prices. Some run whole-page or multi-page ads in real estate magazines and don't list a single price. Some aircraft dealers do the same, but I have one that I'm not ready to replace.

I just mark them off my list and keep on looking. Elsewhere.

What really irks my wife is someone listing a 3 or 4 bedroom home for sale, with literally 2 or 3 pictures of the front of the house and the yard but no inside photos. We mark those off our list, too.

Realtors, aircraft and car salesmen, take note. I WON'T "call for price." Please enjoy sitting by your silent phone and not moving inventory. First buy a house, then replace my truck. All salesmen in east central AL and west central GA are hereby put on notice: act like you want to sell, not like you have a hot commodity that you expect me to wait in line to buy. There are always other fish in the sea . . . Missing yours won't bother me much at all.

Suit yourself.

FWIW, my B55 Baron was listed with all the important details, but 'call for price'. It was one of about 50 listed on Controller at the time. Of those 50, mine was probably one of the best airframes of those 50. I have no complaints about having to talk to a broker to get the price.

It goes back to the comments on another thread about calling vs emailing. If you aren't serious enough to pick up the phone, then they figure you aren't really a serious buyer.

Fearless, would you have called all 50 owners to get their prices? If there are 50 advertised, I'll mark out those out of my price range and concentrate on those that I'm comfortable buying. "Call for price" is often code for "overpriced" in my admittedly limited experience, since I most often don't know the asking price of those.

I've done this on every car I've ever bought, and am doing so on what will be House #6. List your price, or sell to someone with lots of free time.

Or can I call you during dinner, or maybe on Saturday morning when I see the ad? Maybe you're a time zone or two ahead or behind, is midnight here when I see the ad too late for a friendly chat about your pride and joy?

P.S.--phone calls are required after thinning the list from 50 to a handful. No price shown gets culled early, so I don't waste my time creating my short list and prioritizing them first to last.

What's with the "no tire kickers please"

I didn't put that in my ad, when I was selling Atlas (our Pathfinder), but I should have. My God, when you run an ad you get a whole lot of people calling who have absolutely no intention of buying an airplane.

What's funny is that I'm STILL getting calls about that plane, over a year after it sold.

And I, too, have NO idea why you would not put a price in the ad. Every time I've seen such an ad, I've skipped right on over it. IMHO, if they don't list the price, they aren't serious about wanting to sell. They're just testing the waters.

As for phone calling sellers, I did just the opposite. I emailed first, got some more pix and some questions answered -- and THEN I called if it looked good. No email response by the end of the business day? Rejected.

It's a buyer's market. There is no reason to put up with any nonsense from sellers. (And when I was a seller, BTW, I did proverbial backflips for anyone who sounded remotely interested in my plane. Little airplanes aren't exactly flying off the shelves nowadays...)

Okay. BTW, how many people didn't call you?

I hate to admit this. But I basically bought my Cirrus using only email..... Just sayin.... I do agree they should list prices. Otoh i email asking prices on Controller and almost always get an email response.

I was the buyer not the seller.

My point was, I used to be annoyed by the 'call for price' but found that if you eliminate those as a rule, you might be missing out on some really good ones.

No, I eliminated many of those 50 by other details in the adds.

I used to think like some of you and would not have called, but other circumstances (co-located where I knew an IA who had worked for Beech). So I called. Price was mid-range and the airplane was exactly what I was looking for.

Based on my experience, I think the 'call for price' thing equaling 'too expensive' is yet another aviation OWT.

Lots of bored people out there, they like to surf through ads then call you, tell you that 25 years ago what the plane sold for then, proceed to want to tell you a few hangar stories, etc, etc, etc.

They are not serious buyers, just entertaining themselves. Hence, no tire kickers.

Nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, I do lots of buying/selling using ONLY email.

It makes everything clean and neat, with everything spelled out in writing. It also eliminates most of the illiterate idjits in a largely painless way, which is nice.

Well, that's something you have to deal with selling ANYTHING in a buyers market. You'll probably get more calls/emails/smokesignals from tire kickers if you don't list a price. If you list a price, I get to see what you think the plane is worth. Your pictures and description should support that price. If they don't, I pass because you're not being realistic based on the market prices I'm seeing. If they do, I'll contact you.

Blurry pictures = something to hide.
Small pictures = something to hide.
No pictures of the dashboard = something to hide.
No pictures.... your ad better be pretty interesting, or I won't call/email for them.
No pictures and no price? skip. You're wasting my time AND yours.

I'll call a person first to get a general overview of the aircraft, then send a list of questions, some that may require them to go dig through the logbooks. I don't want to spend an hour on the phone while the seller tries to dig up the info. Send an email with those questions, and they can take their time answering them.

If you don't want to deal with buyers, hire a broker.

...list airplanes for sale without listing a price?

Several possibilities:
(1) They are clueless nits.
(2) They haven't been able decide on an asking price.
(3) They know their asking price is above the going rate for comparable aircraft, but also know that they'll get about the same number of queries without an asking price as with one (i.e. very few.) The few prospective buyers who see something of interest in the aircraft that makes them call should be the few self-screened "highly qualified prospects".

You're making a bunch of inaccurate as well as inane assumptions here. :rolleyes2:

Never minded calling ,for a price,if the airplane interested me. However when I listed my airplanes,I listed price and asked for e mails. If we got into negotiations then I would use the phone.

Why do car dealers always have the new cars priced and the used cars not priced. Because the used cars and the shop area where they make their money. They want to size you up before giving you a used car price, (to see if your easy meat , in which case , really stick it to you.) if the ad says no tire kickers or no price listed, I immed. Pass on to the next. In the few times I've responded to this type ad, the seller has turned out to be an a.h.

I base those assumptions on past history.
You want to sell a vehicle for many thousands of dollars? Learn to take some damn pictures. Look like you actually want to sell it. Presentation is rather important.

I've bought and sold more aircraft than most here, so I think I know a thing or two when it comes to selling.
