I was chuckling about this until it occurred to me to wonder how much Federal grant money went into this study.

Probably quite a bit and I'll wager it comes form DARPA or other DoD agencies. There is a lot of study underway to understand how these insects fly so as to copy those flight characteristics on very small surveillance devices that could be deployed. It is the next step for nano-UAVs.

There was a NOVA episode that covered the potential of these types of UAVs as well as the big ones that was very interesting. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/spiesfly/

Heck, a UAV that you could hit in a 152 without fear of crashing! Of course, nano-anything will equal mega-bucks. As is a UAV isn't expensive enough already! Of course, it would be difficult to outfit a nano-UAV with firepower, so they can't be used offensively, but heck, it's a start.

I am waiting to hear how much of an uproar this study causes over at PETA. I mean, c'mon, they talk about tantalizing the bees with enticing odors in a false promise of food or sex or something else the bees like, and then turning up the wind to the degree that the bees lose control stability and crash into the ground.

Talk about your abysmal cruelty to animals! Come on PETA! Where are you and what are you doing about this travesty of justice for our fellow thinking insects!?!?!?

They're a little busy with the silk worm abuse right now, http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=121 and factory bee abuse http://www.peta.org.uk/factsheet/files/FactsheetDisplay.asp?ID=204

But right after that I am sure they'll be right on it
