Firkin hell!

So I'm shopping for a 185, going through all the info and prospects, and I find a few with expired registrations with the Feds!

You have a 150k plus dollar airplane and you can't handle a simple mundane task like sending the Feds 5 bucks!

And of course one of these planes I'm quite interested in

So.... What the low down on fixing this problem on a plane that expired 4mo ago?

Anyone have any first hand knowledge on this?

Thanks

No first hand knowledge, but as usual in aviation, $$$$ salves the wounds.

I can show you a 185 on amphibs that has been sitting for 7 years. It came with a new engine and new floats was parked at the airport and the owner has been paying tiedown fees ever since. After 5 years, there were small volunteer trees growing through the wires of the floats, the airport moved the plane to a new tiedown maybe two years ago, the trees are starting to come up again :( .

Send in the fresh paperwork is all. As long as no one takes the old number, it's not a problem.

That's it? So paper work and under 20 bucks and you're set?!

I thought I heard the Feds punish you by locking your N number out for a few years, so you have to get a new one?

How dumb is that! Take what could be a 170+ thousand dollar plane, or even a small business in the right hands, and let it rot. Sad

Nope, just send in the same paperwork as when you buy a plane. People will do it with a plane they aren't using to fall off the tax rolls.

Same 5 dollars. No one can take your tail number until it gets purged after I think 3 years from the expiration date. Mine had been expired for YEARS when I purchased the airplane. I sent them their 5 dollars thinking that they were going to randomely assign a new number. Got it back with the same number. Prior to that i did some reading in the FAA website that led me to believe that the number had been purged and i wouldnt get it back. Not the case at all. You'll have no problem, just send in the paperwork and pay the fee and you'll be good. Good luck on your search! A 185 is top of my list also!

You're buying a 150k airplane and can't even figure out how to renew an expired registration?

Some people don't care to have their personal particulars published in the fed register of aircraft owners. Particularly people who have assets which are represented by a nice plane.

Think about that for a few seconds.

Yeah, but their plane is typically not deregistered but simply says: 'Wells Fargo Bank Salt Lake City, Trustee'.

As long as my name and address aren't on it, that's fine with me.

You pay Wells Fargo quite a bit more than $5 for that service, though. :D

$4000 to set up and $2500 p.a. to maintain. Small fry if the plane involved is a 10mil bizjet.

But he's talking about a 185...

As cheap as pilots are, I can't see many people who fly small GA paying that kind of money. And with the power of Google and the internet it doesn't really keep you secret anyway.

I doubt that many unregistered aircraft are that way for privacy reasons. That is like driving around with expired tags and without a drivers license so 'the man' doesn't have a current MVA record.

I agree but it was another poster's theory.

Who said an unregistered plane was still flying around? I certainly didn't. I just said a reason to unreg a plane was for privacy. Didn't say it was flying.

By letting the registration expire, you avoid the risk that a test flight would uncover the flaw that the seller would rather you didn't know about.

Not really, all you have to do is fill out the registration form and mail it in and you have the temp reg legal to fly on

Wow, thanks for the useless post.

I've never HAD to deal with this, my current plane, and all the planes I have flown for work never let the thing expire.

So, just send in the normal bill of sale and that's it?

Sweet

Thanks to everyone who posted useful responses.
