for using as a wifi hot spot for your computer

Apple I phone or Samsung S 3

The iPhone 4 and 4S are not 4G capable. I have an iPhone and like it, so I am not slamming it.

The iPhone 4S can download data at a faster speed than the iPhone 4 (up to 14.4 Mbps). While this isn't 4G speed, some cell phone companies may promote the iPhone 4S as being a 4G phone or close to a 4G phone. Technically, this isn't true. As noted above, 4G requires a particular type of cell phone network and chips in the phone. The iPhone 4S doesn't have this chip. Some of the phone companies that offer it in the U.S., most notably Verizon, have extensive 4G networks, but the iPhone doesn't take advantage of them.

the 4s is 4G....just not 4G LTE. I have a HTC One X and love it. I have never been impressed with a samsung phone

There's a (dumb) debate over what "4G" is, but frankly -- iPhone doesn't have it. iPad on Verizon does. (LTE) AT&T's "4G" isn't up to par.

I'd go with the Samsung if you want the best performance (today).

iPhone 5 will probably change all that fairly soon. When, is anyone's guess, but manufacturers are saying they're starting to ship individual components.

This from a dyed in the wool Apple fan for most stuff.

As a side-note, iPad "3" / "New iPad" has LTE on Verizon available today, and it smokes anything else running iOS -- if VZ/LTE is available in a particular area.

I was seeing 20M download speeds lying in my TENT at Oshkosh on Verizon's network there.

Ipad "3" on Verizon also can create a free WiFi Hotspot for up to 5 devices that uses whatever data plan data you have for it.

I got 29.74mbps on my One X (amazing phone) 3 or so bars

Samsung, but if you plan to hot spot a lot, the hot spot pucks tend to work a lot better especially WRT battery life, not to mention you can get a different service with much better data prices.
