Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find out what unit I served in while I was in Vietnam.

I should remember but I don't. Are there any web sites I can visit where I can find my old unit?

I do remember getting "bombed" one night with 33% beer and pot and being chased all night by big red bugs. The next morning I woke up on the other side of the compound and about 10 pounds lighter.

Seriously, I was trying to re-trace my units.

What was the other 67% you got bombed with?

Should be some place you can look yourself up in Army records and get a history of assingments.

You might also try looking yourself up here:

Go to: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/ There are online forms somewhere that allow you to order a copy of your records. I did it for my father from WWII. I sent 6 pages including his discharge papers and Reserve data. I got the same thing back. There was a fire that destroyed a number of records. All they had was what I sent.
Good luck.

John has it right. You can go on line and request your DD214 that will list your unit. Then search that unit and you'll find your "buds".

That must have been one hell of a night! To forget the whole damn tour!

Glad you made it home. Everyday is gravey after that hell hole of a war.

We started drinking a Korean Beer and I think the name was "33".

2 guys could drink a six pack and after 3 bottles your face would literally be numb.

The pot must have been laced with something to make us see "Big Red Bugs" and run from them all night long. I pulled this same stunt twice and had the same "Big Red Bugs" chase us all over the base. (Cu-Chi)

After that I let go of the pot and ALL drugs and would occasionally drink a beer.

The drinking and the beer seemed to be more forgiving than the pot and drugs. A week or so after my incident I had a friend O.D. and die.

Anyway, I came on shore around Tansunut (SP) air base from a troop ship. We had our rifles but NO ammo. (Against insurance laws to carry weapons and live ammo aboard ship.)

They parked us at the end of the runway and the first night we were kept up by the fighters taking off. The next day we went to Cu-Chi. I was a diesel mechanic. I stayed there about a week and then made SP/5 and was assigned to 5 tanks to maintain. That was the last I ever saw of the base camp unless we came back in for supplies.

The unit was a Maintenance Battalion and we were around 1200 strong. I finished my tour and then went to Headquarters 5th Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. (General's company)

Hope this clears up why I can't remember exactly the Maintenance Battalion number.

Note = I was a kid during viet nam, but it sounds like what my dad described as Ba-mi-Ba, and it had formaldehyde in it. Some folks reacted in "unique" ways to that particular chemical.

Geez. Guys.

The beer is "ba ba ba" (333). It is Vietnamese, not Korean. The ever popular Tiger beer over there is actually brewed in Singapore.
