Was flying last week in a plane with GTX345 and my IPAD with WingX and no other FIS-B devices. Garmin and WingX don’t play together, but for about 20 seconds during the flight the IPAd displayed weather radar faintly on the chart and then ended. The IPAd wasn’t linked to the 345. Maybe there were multiple periods I didn’t notice.

Can’t figure out where the weather data was coming from.

Only one problem. iPad didn’t have an active cellular provider.

I'd guess one of - your tablet picked up an open wifi randomly. the software momentarily forgot what time it was and displayed old radar. something glitched, again software, and displayed old radar. evil spirits.

I'd bet either the first one or the last one.

That's a good possibility. I was surprised how many WiFi routers an iPad could see in rural Nebraska at 1000-1500 feet AGL.
That’s one heck of a WiFi router to be picked up 1/4 mile away. Most are not usable 150 ft from the source.

I would normally agree, but I saw several of them! Another possibility is some cache wasn't cleared and I confused it with real-time data.

We use Spectrum for our cellular and internet. When we’re out and about and near someone else’s router, if they’re using either Spectrum or some other “partner” provider, we’ll automatically get logged into “Spectrum mobile” or some similar name if the WiFi is on. I wonder if that’s what’s happening for you, as you fly over a city, stadium, AirVenture, or someone else pumping out higher-powered WiFi.

Add: it’s not actually logging into “their” WiFi network but some other public one that their router must be carrying in the background.

Where I was flying, it would need to be several people with the last option. Unless "city" means a thousand people or less.

We’ve camped at Hovenweep National Monument, which is way off the grid, and to our surprise they had WiFi broadcasting all over the campground. I suspect the NPs/NMs now all have WiFi piped to them somehow for firefighting support, etc. There’s also truck stops, city parks (especially in rural areas), etc.

My point is it’s surprising how much WiFi is getting pumped out out there - and how accessible it can be with the right carrier. This still generically feels like the answer to your question.

Interesting.
I've had a strange thing occur where I'll be at the airport doing preflights or something using my WiFi only iPad (no cellular), sentry off and in my bag, and then randomly ForeFlight accurately displays my location on the airport.
My location only pops up for a few seconds, maybe 15 seconds max, and then it goes away. The thing is: it has no WiFi or hotspot connections -- I've confirmed that much. And as far as I know from the spec sheet, this iPad has no built in GPS unit. Under normal operation, it cannot find my location.
It only seems to occur when I wake my iPad up after the screen was off. How it gets my location randomly and then just displays it, but then seems to magically forget my location, is odd.
