When Glendale Ruled The Skies

Great find, John!

In Pt 2 I like how the copilot looks out the window to give a position report.

I remember as a kid walking through a similar covered entrace to board from the ramp. I felt so special, I imagine everyone did.

Thanks, John. I really enjoyed that. Kind of sad though.

Nice videos. It's amazing that Van Nuys survived, Long Beach survived, but Glendale faded into history. Then again, back in the 30's and 40's, Massachusetts had airfields all along the coast and very few survived the dozer.

I learned to fly out of Grand Central in the 50s. We were recently in Burbank and visited the old control tower. It was a saddening experience.

Here's part of a 1945 chart ...

As an airline terminal, Grand Central was convenient to downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. But it was tightly squeezed between the Santa Monica Mountains and Verdugo Hills, and thus had no future as an all-weather airport. Its place as L.A.'s major commercial airport was taken when nearby Union Air Terminal (now KBUR) opened, which but for a clearer approach from the west, wasn't (and isn't) much better.
