My grandpa had a light stroke day after christmas. This is his 3rd (I think). He fell on the ice earlier this fall and pinched his Sciatic (sp) nerve, so his legs dont work anymore. He was getting pretty close to being able to walk again thanks to Home Health therapy, but after the stroke that hope has gone down the tube, im afraid. He's got an electric wheelchair that he uses to wheel around the house and drive my Grandma nuts. Not being able to get out of the house for over 60 days has really been bugging him though, so we are looking for a van or other vehicle with a wheelchair ramp or lift on it. He is 56 inches tall when sitting on his scooter. Any help is surely appreciated. Cost needs to be low as well, under 5000. Its a ***** getting old, body falls apart and you go broke. Thanks!

It's REALLY hard to find anything in that price range. But here's one private party seller with a full-size van, 1995, for $4500 buy-it-now.

Good luck to Grandpa!!

thanks troy, that one doesnt have enough clearance but ill surf ebay some more. ive mostly been monitoring craigslists.

Can he "duck"? It's only 48" too short. It's going to be hard to find one with a bigger opening--it's a full size van!

im not sure. grandma just gave me his measurements. ive got a line on a ford E250 with a rear loading lift and a high top. that might work...

just talked to grandma. they've considered arrangements where they fold up the scooter/chair and whatever. they both turn 70 this year, grandpa is pretty big and basically paralyzed from the waist down, and pretty weak from the waist up. so they need simple. simple is driving the wheelchair in the van, and then grandma shuts the door and drives the van down the road.

Hmmm. I think you might be bale to pull that off with mini-van, certainly a fdull size van, and ramp for teh rear or side door.

I was able to put the John Deere tractor in the back my Silhouette with a pair of rented ramps. I only had to push the steering wheel down a smidge.

nope not a veteran, thanks for the site scott, but all of those are in Australia.

Tony, one of my Clients is American Medical Response in MA, CT and NY. They provide wheelchair and ambulance service. Needless to say, they have a pile of decomissioned wheelchair vans in a variety of stages. I believe this might be what your looking for.. Shoot me an email w/ your contact number and I will put you in touch w/ the Fleet Manager. Maybe they can help!

By the way, Tony, if you find something out this way that might work for you, let me know. I'd be glad to help out in terms of looking at it/making sure it'll survive the trip home/help you drive it back to Ames.

is anyone here in or near New Smyrna Beach, FL? There's a promising van on ebay from there.

Tony, I belong to a senior Citizens organization and we got a van with a wheel chair ramp from our County On Aging. Sometimes they have vans for sale. They are in good shape with not a lot of miles on them. The one we got was surplus and they gave it to our Senior Citizens group. It was just parked at the county road shop. Check with your locale County On Aging Department.

Andy, not yet.

Bob, thanks for the idea. Grandma has a good lead right now so we'll see how that turns out.

Thanks Tony! Let me light a fire and see if either they do or don't have something that will work...
