What's Going on Here?

Yawn. This used to be a daily event when the Cold War was at its peak. Bears flew along our airspace and P-3s, EC-135s and B-52s flew along theirs. Don't see the big huhu. :dunno:

Probably Bear-F's on an ELINT mission, and not much chance at all they were carrying weapons of any kind (no less nuclear) other than some shells in their self-defense tail guns, no matter what the Washington Free Beacon (of which I have never heard before) says. ELINT Bears don't carry weapons, and the Russians keep their nukes under lock and several keys. We haven't had a nuclear-armed aircraft in the air since the Palomares crash in 1966 (at least, not on purpose, and a bunch of people got fired over that when it happened), and I think the Russians have done much the same.

In any event, it's pretty much ops-normal, and we do the same to them on a routine basis with US Navy EP-3's and USAF RC-135's.

I'm sure we still do. I have seen one up close.

For those who have never seen one the Tu95 is REALLY HUGE and has about 90 kts on the P3. But the P3 has is all over the Tu95 for operational reliability....

I'm surprised they still fly them, their op cost are staggering, and yes they are huge.

When we had them on our wing tip, we would gently turn into them, they would just wave and climb.

When I was stationed at Eielson AFB, near Fairbanks, AK it was an almost weekly occurrence that either the Bear or a Backfire bomber would overfly our airspace.

I can remember watching the F4's scramble to intercept them while playing softball. Of course our RC135's were flying the arc listening in on them almost 24/7.
