What's between Austin and Albuquerque?

I agree, and not far from there is Wink Texas. At Wink Airport there is a guy named Charlie Cooper, the manager. He lives there inside the old FSS.

A couple of years ago I flew the 170 in there and was stranded. I've never been treated better anywhere so far than I have been at Winkler County Airport.

I want to go back to visit. There is absolutely nothing in Winkler county but one nice old pilot that really helped me out.
If you go to Wink - be sure to look for the Winkhole...

Charlie used to have some good photos of the tank farm conflagration from years ago, wow.

marfa, tx

Nothing there but cows and spray-painted dogs.

Place is a lot better, though, since it no longer houses any Quaids.

Spray painted dogs?

Nate:

It seems that, one fine day, this fellow named Donald Judd moved from New York City ("get a rope!") to Marfa, and started doing "art" (loosely defined as blocks of aluminum and concrete at which people who are much more brilliant and worthy than I gaze for extended periods, oohing and clucking about how powerful the pieces are...). Then some foundations were established to ensure that Judd's legacy (whatever the heck it is) was enduring.

So now, no one who actually lives in Marfa can afford to rent commercial space in town, and all the storefronts have art galleries in them.

And lots of Very Odd People flock to the county seat of Presidio County. And I have it on very good authority that, sometimes, they paint their dogs odd colors. Heard it somewhere.

I believe that, in Colorado, they call it, "Californication."

Lots of really nice people in Marfa. Some of them say, "Buh!" Not sure I understand that one, yet.

Wish I was there, rat now.

Sounds like that idiot Christo who wants to drape cloth over a section of the Arkansas River out here... the folks who live/enjoy the area are attempting to tell the world that the canyon walls themselves are the "art" and this idiot will just bring gawkers who'll trash the natural beauty... but he'll probably do it anyway.

I believe this would qualify as a painted dog...

Can't believe he got this far with the BLM. But then I did work long enough for the Forest Service to know you just can't say no. I hope Christo is at least paying the costs.

Wow, this thread got a lot of responses! Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see what I can squeeze in. It's a shame there's no crew car in Sonora, TX.

Ted, if you're really going to stop there, PM me. I got a lead on a van you can borrow to run over to the Caverns. There's no OFFICIAL car. wink wink.

The Pizza Foundation in Marfa is quite tasty. Breakfast at Alice's is hard to beat if you're on a budget.

The weather on Friday was bad enough that I decided to fly into Austin on Saturday and I got in that evening. It's a rare thing for me to be able to fly at only 11,000 feet (with the occasional block clearance to 12,000) and actually be above the weather. Looking at the skew-t diagrams for the route of flight made it easier for me to see where the potential icing layers might lurk. The only hard IMC I was in was around Austin itself.

I'm probably leaving today. Don't know yet where I'll be tonight, but I'll be in Carlsbad, NM Tuesday through Wednesday. Probably Albuquerque Wednesday night, but definitely by Thursday night.

although I no longer live there, I can make some good suggestions for albuquerque for ya (starting with avoid Bode, which means avoid KAEG). gas is more at KABQ but Cutter is awesome.

things nearby? KSAF has some nice views but not much to do if arriving by plane. 0E0 is desolate but there's a lot if gliders in and out all day.

okay owingay airport has a casino nearby. used to be called San Juan. Carizozo has cool airport dogs. Raton has great views and a good restaurant.

avoid the warzone in albuquerque and you will be fine.

Although Bode is somewhat unpleasant to renters, I gather that it's an ok stopover destination. A year ago, the Bomber Range Cafe reopened for breakfast and lunch. And I remember how my DPE fumed because Cutter people wanted to charge him a parking fee when he arrived to give me a checkride. I suspect they looked at his Cirrus and saw a flying wallet. So the traditional differences may be not terribly pronounced if one is not based there. Still, if I wanted to go into the city, I'd stop at Cutter. They have rental cars parked on site, and Bode do not. If I only wanted a quick refueling stop, I'd consider Mid-Walley E98. It has a self-service pump.

E98 is a quick stop. Had a good price when I was in there last year.

Spent Monday night in San Angelo. Wanted to spend that night in Midland so I could go to the CAF museum Tuesday morning, but the hotel rooms were taken by oil workers. Spent Tuesday night in Carlsbad and visited the caverns Wednesday. Went to Albuquerque last night (omg the headwinds were awful-sometimes my C182RG groundspeed was under 70 knots) and parked at Cutter. I'm here until Monday. I've got track meets to attend.

But, I'm able to give my new Transformer Prime with Avilution a workout. I installed Avilution on my original Droid too. The Droid uses GPS just fine. The Prime is unable to get the GPS signals. I installed PDANet on the two devices too. I'll probably start a thread in the technical forums after I get back home about my experiences.

A week later and I would have been able to meet you in Albuquerque. I am going to be there on business week after next. Next week, I'm in Vegas on business.
