Nice. Depending on how modern you wanted to go, you could update things like your Com radio. But if it works and reliable, no need to spend money.

It has made it all these years like that, why change now.

While it appears pretty, it seems to be an inefficient use of panel space. The layout looks passable for a tandem seating arrangment but makes no sense for a side-by-side.

I personally like classic airplane with classic equipment, so I say it's good.
Certainly the arrangement of the gauges can be more ergonomic but it does not look like it can be done without tearing apart the whole panel. So perhaps you could add another CDI and heading indicator on the right side but I would not do more than that. I also really like the wooden finish.

Looks great and has flown more than most pilots ever will just the way it is. Why change it? Just restore it.

Unless you want to rip it out and go modern, that would be cool.

After spending a fair amount of time updating old Cessna panels, I'd just leave it in vintage configuration.

I wish I could, but we need radios, and the 48 came with out any. the NAV 11 may stay, the Narco com is a 360 channel, it must go, the transponder is way over on the right, mounted under the panel. that must be moved.

So I may move the transponder / mod C to the radio hole, and use the other 3.125 hole for a Becker com.

If you're swapping coms, I'd get a used Garmin GNC 250XL

Normal size and I've seen them cheap on ebay and barnstormers, aeo, etc.

Think most folks like a GPS, kill a few birds with a panel mounted streamline package.

It's yesteryears tech, so it's cheap, but it would command a higher price for your plane then a round radio IMHO.

Tom,

That's way too nice of a preserved, original panel to chop up and make "modern". With the exception of perhaps a new comm/transponder in the lower left, I'd do my best to keep it as original as possible.

Anyone who will be interested in a 48' rag-wing C-170 will place a higher value on a stock panel than a modern, capable IFR panel that looks like a new C-172. I know a guy in the middle of a C-170 restoration who is trying to find parts to restore his old modified panel, he'd kill for what you have.

Mike-

What he said. ^

Replace the lower left boat anchor and leave the rest as is.

These would be a conversation starter.

Me? I don't plan, I just look out the window and go.

but the 48 is being restored for resale.

Tom, if I were buying it, I would want it as original as possible. But that is just me.

Figure out how to put a "modern" radio and transponder behind a period correct radio faceplate and keep the rest original.

Is there a giant box in the back for that electric compass?

And, how much does that WWII gyro weigh?

That whole row is altered from the 48 OEM panel.

note the key is way over on the right? and a vac gauge where the key should be.
